Merzig-Wadern offers different ways to experience culture and nature: Perl-Borg is home to a reconstructed Roman villa, Merzig has a workshop where machinery is demonstrated, and there is also a garden and an extensive network of routes. Other special places have their own focus—from a sculpture park to an underground visit. When planning your trip, it is worth first deciding which experiences matter most to you.

Experience Roman history and technology

The reconstructed Roman Villa Borg in Perl-Borg is a Roman villa rustica with archaeological treasures. Guided tours are offered in German, French, English, Dutch and Luxembourgish. The site brings Roman history to life through a reconstructed villa; you can take the tour in one of the five languages offered.

A different period and technology take centre stage at the Fellenberg Mill in Merzig. The precision engineering workshop dates back to 1927 and is operational: machines are still powered and demonstrated there using water power. While a Roman complex has been reconstructed in Perl-Borg, the mill shows its technology in motion.

At the Düppenweiler Historic Copper Mine, an underground tour featuring the “Mystallica” audiovisual multimedia system is part of the visitor experience. The three destinations therefore also differ in format: the villa, demonstrated machinery and an underground tour each appeal to different interests.

Gardens and special places

The Garden of the Senses in Merzig comprises eleven themed garden areas and a children’s play garden. Events are held there regularly; in June, these include the Rose Days, with a rose and garden market and expert advice. If you would like to combine your visit with an event, the Rose Days can serve as a seasonal guide; check the dates for the relevant edition before travelling.

In Beckingen, the Saar Garden includes a sculpture park with a landing stage, a playground and a football golf course. Outdoor art sits alongside opportunities for play and physical activity. You can decide which of these features will shape your outing based on the interests of your travel group.

One natural highlight is the Bietzen healing spring. It bubbles up between the Saar and the B51 at the entrance to Bietzen and is considered the only healing spring in Saarland. Its precise location sets it apart from the region’s historic sites and landscaped garden areas.

Routes along the Saar and outdoor excursions

Merzig has a total of 300 kilometres of walking and hiking trails, which are excellently signposted. Cyclists can also use well-developed cycle paths on both sides of the Saar. Hiking and cycling therefore offer two different ways to plan your stay: the trail network is described for walks and hikes, while the cycle paths are distinguished by their location on both banks of the Saar.

Near the destination, a 1,250-metre-long, low-barrier treetop path runs through the forest above the Cloef. It leads to a 42-metre-high observation tower with panoramic views of the Saar Loop and the surrounding landscape. Check seasonal operating details before your visit.

When it officially opened, the Aquapark at Losheim lido was described as having eleven elements for climbing, playing and sliding. This description refers to the opening; if you are planning a visit, check the seasonal opening times.

Choose the right focus

If you would like to plan your stay around an event, there are two different seasonal options: the Rose Days in June and the Viez Festival in Merzig, held every year on the first Saturday in October. Check the specific event dates before your trip, and choose your base according to the experiences that matter to you.
