Beckingen: Railway History, Art and Nature
Accommodation in Beckingen
Beckingen brings together visible railway history, traces of copper mining and paths through varied landscapes. Art adds another dimension at SaarGarten, while cycling and hiking routes offer further ways to experience your stay. You can shape your trip around cultural history, nature or physical activity. In the wider destination of Merzig-Wadern, Perl-Borg is home to the reconstructed Roman Villa Borg, a Roman villa rustica with archaeological treasures.
Railway History and Industrial Heritage
Beckingen railway station is a protected sandstone building, constructed in 1858 in the English Tudor style. The restored Alte Station in Beckingen houses the municipality’s tourist information office and the information centre for the Wolferskopf nature reserve. The protected area covers 337 hectares. If you plan to visit the information centres, check their current opening times in advance.
At the Historic Copper Mine in DĂĽppenweiler, visitors can use a media terminal independently to learn more about the copper works and ore processing in the 18th century. Guided visits include the underground and above-ground facilities. This offers two different ways to learn about the site: exploring the terminal independently or taking a guided tour of the facilities.
Bunker 766 at the Beckingen Bunker Museum serves as a documentation centre on the Westwall. Beckinger Talblicke takes in historically significant places, as well as Beckingen’s cultural and industrial history and the Karcher family. This short walking route explores history in a different way from a visit to the copper mine.
Forests, Ridge Trail and Legends Trail
Beckingen’s landscape is characterised by extensive forests and areas of largely untouched nature. The Panorama-Höhenweg crosses the shell-limestone plateau of Merchingen and runs from Saarfels to Hargarten, offering sweeping views along the way. The Litermont-Sagenweg starts at the Historic Copper Mine in Düppenweiler and leads through forests, fields, meadows and cattle pastures, over bridges and through deep ravines. The routes offer different experiences: the ridge trail links the plateau with scenic views, while the legends trail passes through varied landscapes. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Art at SaarGarten and Routes Along the Saar
SaarGarten Beckingen also serves as a sculpture park. At the entrance stands “Dreiländereck”, a sculpture by the Lorraine artist Toun. The SaarGarten’s network of paths connects walkers, cyclists and runners to further routes along the Saar via the adjacent Leinpfad. Beckingen also offers the Saar-Lückner-Runde, the Saar-Familienrunde and E-Velo routes for recreational cyclists. The sculpture park, riverside connections and named cycling routes offer different ways to enjoy the outdoors during your stay.
Getting There and Choosing Accommodation
Beckingen is served by the Saarbrücken–Trier railway line and has a boat landing stage. From the landing stage, you can reach SaarGarten, the football golf course, cycling and hiking trails, and Alte Station Beckingen. If you are travelling by train, check the current timetable.
