Discover Großrosseln
Accommodation in Großrosseln
Großrosseln brings together Baroque architecture, garden design and forestry history with trails through the woodland and meadows of the Warndt. The former hunting lodge and the forest garden take centre stage in Karlsbrunn; in the Warndt, trails wind through the landscape for hiking and cycling. You can choose different highlights when planning your trip: a freely accessible garden with historic design features or outdoor activities.
Karlsbrunn: Hunting Lodge and Forest Garden
The former Baroque hunting lodge of Karlsbrunn and the adjoining forest garden bring together Baroque architecture, forestry history, garden design and nature. The 1.2-hectare forest garden was created in 2008 as part of the international “Gardens without Borders” project. It is open to the public year-round and free to visit. Reconstructed paths, walls and steps shape the grounds, along with a winding path, a rest pavilion, viewpoints and an elevated point in the garden. As you walk around, you will encounter a range of design features: architectural structures, the winding path and the garden grounds. This lets you discover the cultural and natural aspects of the forest garden together.
Hiking and Cycling in the Warndt
The Warndt around Großrosseln offers a different focus. Routes for walking and cycling pass through woodland and meadows, by remnants of the mining past and other places of interest. These include the Warndt pond, the hunting lodge and forest garden in Karlsbrunn, Karlsbrunn Wildlife Park, Nikolausweiher and Velsen Mine. The options offer a range of themes for planning your trip: exploring the landscape, mining history or the landscaped grounds in Karlsbrunn. Hiking and cycling offer different ways to experience the Warndt. First decide which mode of transport you prefer, then choose the places that interest you most. In the broader Saarbrücken Regional Association destination, the Velo visavis routes lead away from traffic into the natural areas of Saarkohlenwald and Warndt Forest, as well as along the Upper Saar.
Culture in the Broader Saarbrücken Regional Association Destination
For culture enthusiasts, the broader Saarbrücken Regional Association destination expands the range of options. The Völklingen Ironworks is the first industrial monument from this era to have been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is also an outstanding example of an integrated pig-iron production plant of the type that shaped industry in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Other historical highlights include Saarbrücken Castle, a cultural monument dating from the 18th century, and the Historical Museum Saar. The latter is a cultural monument spanning the 13th to 20th centuries and includes an underground castle and exhibitions. These themes differ markedly from the garden and forestry history of Karlsbrunn: here, the focus is on industrial history, a castle and a museum. If you would like to include these cultural themes in your trip planning, you can consider the broader Saarbrücken Regional Association destination.
