Experience the Saarbrücken Regional Association
Accommodation in Saarbrücken Regional Association
In the Saarbrücken Regional Association, industrial heritage, historic buildings and paths into nature sit side by side. The Völklingen Ironworks, museums, a protected garden and cycling and hiking trails each offer something different. When planning your trip, it helps to decide what you want to focus on: industrial history, cultural attractions, outings with children, or time spent cycling and walking.
Industrial history and cultural attractions
The Völklingen Ironworks was the first industrial monument of its era to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. At the same time, it is an outstanding example of an integrated pig-iron production plant of the type that shaped industry in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Its World Heritage status and industrial classification offer two ways of looking at the same place: its significance as a monument and the production method that defined an important period in industrial history.
Other cultural attractions also reflect different centuries. Saarbrücken Castle is a cultural monument dating from the 18th century and hosts concerts. The Historical Museum Saar is classified as a cultural monument spanning the 13th to 20th centuries; it includes an underground castle and offers exhibitions. Wintringen Chapel Cultural Venue is a cultural monument dating from the 15th century and also an art station in the Bliesgau UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. When choosing cultural attractions, you can therefore decide how to balance industrial history, exhibitions, concerts and historic buildings. If you are planning around a particular date or exhibition, check the current programme.
Gardens, animals and outings together
The Franco-German Garden combines a specific heritage designation with opportunities for play breaks: the grounds have been protected as a listed monument since 2001 and include two playgrounds. If these are important to your plans, check the current municipal visitor information before your visit, as facilities can change.
The Saarbrücken Zoo and Saarbrücken Wildlife Park offer different options for observing animals. The zoo is home to more than 1,000 animals from 150 different species. The wildlife park has 120 native and established animal species. As animal populations and species lists can change, it is worth checking the latest visitor information if this is the main reason for your visit.
Cycling, hiking and choosing where to stay
The region has an extensive network of recreational cycle routes. The Saarbrücken Regional Association established the Velo visavis routes in partnership with neighbouring districts on both the German and French sides. Away from traffic, they lead into the natural areas of the Saarkohlenwald and Warndt forests, as well as along the Upper Saar. This gives you a choice between forest areas and a route along the Saar when planning a day out. Route alignments and signposting can change, so check the current route before setting off.
If you prefer hiking, the Schäfertrail follows the sheep’s paths. If you plan to hike the Schäfertrail, take it into account when choosing where to stay.
For a visit to the Völklingen Ironworks, the wider Saarland destination offers a specific rail travel tip: from Völklingen station, it is a five-minute walk to the World Heritage Site; Saarbrücken Central Station, with IC, ICE and TGV connections, is a ten-minute train ride from Völklingen. Check the timetables before you travel.
