Discover Anhalt-Bitterfeld
Accommodation in Anhalt-Bitterfeld
Anhalt-Bitterfeld lies on the Elbe and Mulde rivers, between the Dübener Heide and Fläming, and covers 1,450 km². River landscapes, traces of history and striking viewpoints offer different starting points for your trip. You can decide whether you would mainly like to explore the landscape, industrial history, or museum and garden culture. This focus can also help you find suitable accommodation.
Changing landscapes and Baroque garden art
The Mittelelbe Biosphere Reserve is considered a place of tranquillity, discovery and relaxation in Anhalt-Bitterfeld. Lake Goitzsche, considered one of Germany’s youngest bodies of water, is near Bitterfeld. Lignite was once mined there, with amber extracted as a by-product. The lake’s history thus connects views of the landscape with an insight into the region’s former resource extraction.
The Baroque Maze in Altjeßnitz offers a different perspective: at 2,600 m², it is Germany’s largest surviving Baroque maze. While Lake Goitzsche recalls the changing landscape, here the focus is on a landscaped Baroque garden. Both offer their own perspective on the region’s history and character.
Town history and views in Zörbig
The Zörbig Local History Museum presents the town’s eventful history in twelve rooms, from prehistoric and early history to the recent past. The exhibition thus spans a broad period of time. A visit to the museum also offers a change of perspective: visitors can climb the tower of the museum’s castle for expansive views across the countryside. The town’s history and views of the wider surroundings can therefore be experienced side by side in one place.
Routes and panoramic views
The Bitterfeld Arch offers another view across the area around Bitterfeld. Its 540-metre-long path passes platforms and benches; the uppermost ramp ends at a balcony with panoramic views. This makes for a different experience from the expansive view from the castle tower in Zörbig: at the arch, the path itself leads across several platforms to the balcony.
There is also a clearly defined route marker for a cycling trip: the Mulde Cycle Route passes through Löbnitz in Saxony and continues to the Muldestausee lake in the district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld. The route thus connects a section in Saxony with a destination in the district. This may be useful for planning if you would like to combine your stay with a cycling tour.
Choose the right focus for your stay
If you are planning a cycling trip, you can also consider the Muldestausee lake as a destination on the Mulde Cycle Route. This means you can choose your starting point according to your interests without having to assume that one particular place suits all these plans.
Saxony-Anhalt as a broader cultural setting
The wider travel destination of Saxony-Anhalt offers an additional cultural setting: the state is home to six UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These include the Bauhaus Dessau, whose Bauhaus Building, Masters’ Houses and Törten housing estate invite visitors to take part in guided tours, workshops and discussions about design and society. At the Bauhaus Museum Dessau, the collection “Versuchsstätte Bauhaus. The Collection” comprises more than 1,000 exhibits and tells the story of the Bauhaus school in Dessau. These examples are part of the broader travel destination of Saxony-Anhalt.
