Muldestausee combines water activities, trails through the floodplain landscape and the history of a flooded open-cast mine. Winter waterbirds and cultural sites such as the Red Tower in Pouch add to the experience. Water sports, nature and history give your stay a range of different highlights.

Water and Trails

At Muldestausee and Lake Gröbern, water activities on offer include fishing, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, rowing, canoeing and dragon boating. The 6.3-square-kilometre expanse of water at Muldestausee also provides a venue for sailing regattas and dragon boat, canoe and rowing competitions. Numerous cycling and hiking trails run around the lake, offering another way to enjoy an active stay.

The KOHLE | DAMPF | LICHT cycle route can be linked with the Elbe Cycle Route, EuroVelo 1, the Berlin–Leipzig Cycle Route and the Mulde Valley Cycle Route to form a longer circular route. This gives you different options for your time on the water and on your bike: regattas and water sports on the one hand, and trails around the lake and a combined cycling circuit on the other.

The Mulde Floodplain, River Delta and Winter Birds

Upstream of Muldestausee, the Mulde floodplain is characterised by riparian woodland, meadows, trees and shrubs, flood channels and oxbow lakes. At the inlet to Muldestausee, the Mulde Bridge near Pouch offers a view over the river delta that formed behind the inlet structure. A walk from the inlet follows the upper edge of the Mulde Valley slope, opening up wide views over the Mulde floodplain and the former Goitzsche mining area.

Winter offers a distinctive perspective on nature here, too: the ice-free inlet area becomes a gathering place for northern waterbirds, including goosanders, common goldeneyes and tufted ducks. Muldestausee also lies on the edge of DĂĽbener Heide Nature Park, where a valuable biotope provides a habitat for rare and endangered animal species.

Mining History and a Viewpoint

Muldestausee was created in the 1970s, after the Mulde was diverted and the former Muldenstein lignite open-cast mine was flooded. On the north shore, HAUS AM SEE features a permanent exhibition with more than 80 specimens of native animals and information about the reservoir’s former open-cast mining history. The exhibits explore nature and how the landscape was formed from a range of perspectives.

The Red Tower in Pouch was built in the 13th century and stands 30 metres tall. More than 105 steps lead to the viewing platform. From the top, you can see across Goitzsche Landscape Park, Pouch, Muldestausee and Dübener Heide—a different perspective on the landscape from the one offered by the upper edge of the Mulde Valley slope.

Regional Offerings

Above Muldestausee, along the KOHLE | DAMPF | LICHT cycle route, stands the “Pannenkoek” Schachtbaude. It serves pancakes, poffertjes and locally made meat products. The menu may change. Gröberner Seekate offers fresh and smoked fish specialities, homemade game sausage, fresh eggs, selected wines and products from Dübener Heide; product availability may also vary.

Nature and history add to the range of options if you would also like to explore the Mulde floodplain, its wildlife or the historic sites.
