Discover Osternienburger Land
Accommodation in Osternienburger Land
Osternienburger Land brings together historical themes on very different scales: in Reppichau, the Sachsenspiegel is visible throughout the village, while Wulfen and Drosa recall a history reaching far back into the past. The Chörau Museum Farm turns the focus to everyday home life; the “Water | Meadows | Stones” cycle tour adds an active perspective. This lets you tailor the balance of cultural sites, landscapes and outdoor activities to your travel group’s interests.
Cultural history in Reppichau and Wulfen
The open-air “Sachsenspiegel” museum in Reppichau brings figures from the manuscript to life through sculptures, murals and coats of arms placed throughout the village. Eike von Repgow, probably from Reppichau, wrote the Sachsenspiegel in the early 13th century on behalf of Count Hoyer of Falkenstein. The likely place of origin, the work and its patron give the images a historical context.
The church in Wulfen dates back to 1070. The Wulfen megalithic tomb is also located on Hoher Berg in Wulfen: a 3.60-metre-long Neolithic passage grave with a passage and three capstones. It is considered an important prehistoric site in Anhalt, with an exceptionally rich range of finds. The church and tomb represent very different historical periods; at the passage grave, you can also observe specific dimensions and structural features.
A glimpse of everyday life and events
The Chörau Museum Farm presents life from 1935 to 1970 in two furnished rooms. It also features an authentically furnished East German apartment from the 1970s, with a fitted kitchen, a youth bedroom, a bedroom and a living room. This brings different perspectives on furnished living spaces together under one roof. While the open-air museum in Reppichau places figures from a manuscript throughout the village, Chörau focuses on interiors and their furnishings.
A small café at the Museum Farm serves coffee, cake, drinks and ice cream. The Knights’ Hall hosts living-room concerts, talks and other events. Since 2012, a restaurant has operated in a building in front of the manor house at Rittergut Maxdorf. The garden features old and rare trees as well as an old well. Dining and events thus complement the historical exhibitions with further reasons to visit.
Landscape, megalithic tombs and getting out and about
The Wulfener Bruch covers more than 800 hectares and forms part of the Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve. Another prehistoric landmark is the Teufelskeller near Drosa, a 5,000-year-old megalithic tomb. It consists of six granite supporting stones and one massive capstone. Signs to the Teufelskeller start in the centre of Drosa; there is a small car park and a rest area nearby.
The “Water | Meadows | Stones” tour is a good option for exploring by bike. The Europaradweg R1 and the Luther Trail can also be accessed by bicycle. Public transport connections are available via the railway stations at Wulfen, Sibbesdorf and Elsnigk. This allows you to set different priorities when planning your trip, with exhibitions and historical sites alongside cycling and landscape.
