Nebra (Unstrut): Nebra Sky Disc, castle ruins and Unstrut routes
Accommodation in Nebra
Nebra (Unstrut) takes you from the history of the Nebra Sky Disc through medieval traces to hiking and cycling routes. The Arche Nebra puts the find at the center; St. George’s Church on the old town market and the castle ruins also shape the area’s cultural and historical character. Along the river, you can also enjoy nature watching and routes through the landscape. You can tailor your stay to culture, exercise or nature themes.
The Nebra Sky Disc and the story of its discovery
The Nebra Sky Disc is considered the world’s oldest concrete depiction of the cosmos. At the site where it was found, the Arche Nebra visitor center provides information about the discovery. Archaeology and astronomy come together there through guided tours, activities and special exhibitions. This offers different ways to explore the disc: you can focus on the story of its discovery, explore astronomical themes or include the changing exhibition topics in your plans.
Church, castle ruins and wine
St. George’s Church is a defining feature of the market square in Nebra’s old town. It was founded in 1416; the Late Gothic building is made of Nebra sandstone. You can see funerary shields dating from 1678/79. Guided tours are available on request. Nebra Castle Ruins preserve the remains of a medieval hilltop castle, including a residential tower, chapel remains with frescoes and vaulted wine cellars. From the ruins, you can look across the Unstrut Valley towards Memleben and over the Unstrut floodplains.
The municipal vineyard lies below the castle ruins. Souvignier Gris, Regent and Cabernet Cortis are cultivated there. The Nebra Wine Cellar is a restored vaulted room that originally belonged to the old castle complex. At tastings, white and red wines are served with food and side dishes; the exact selection may vary depending on the booking. The church, castle remains and wine thus offer different cultural, historical and culinary points of interest for planning your trip.
Choosing your route: hiking and cycling
The Trias-Tor hiking area connects Nebra with Wendelstein, Memleben and Wangen via a 32-kilometer circular route; alternatively, there are separate eastern and western loops. The loop from Nebra to Wangen is 11 kilometers long and includes 250 meters of elevation gain. This gives you a choice between a shorter section and the longer circular route. When planning, you can take the route length and elevation gain into account without treating the two routes as equivalent.
The Nebra Sky Disc Cycle Route is about 73 kilometers long and connects the site where the Nebra Sky Disc was found with the State Museum of Prehistory in Halle (Saale). There are also signposted cycle routes along the Unstrut between Naumburg and Nebra as part of the Himmelswege (Sky Paths). Before setting out, check the route length, infrastructure and signage; markers may change during construction or maintenance work. This lets you tailor your cycling plans to the locations and route you choose.
Nature watching by the river
The Nebra Bee Education Garden is located almost directly on the banks of the Unstrut. Guided tours are led by experienced beekeepers and require advance registration. An insect hotel provides information about nesting opportunities for wild bees. There is also a wetland habitat where you can observe the diverse animal and plant life. This adds a distinct focus to the cultural and route themes: instead of taking a longer route, you can also focus your plans on nature watching and insect habitats.
