The town of Berga and the railway line together form the northern boundary of the Helmestausee Berga-Kelbra EU Special Protection Area for Birds. Nature, hiking trails and a long local history offer different ways to shape your stay. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether you would most like to explore the birdlife, hiking destinations or the town’s history.

Berga and its long history

Berga is considered one of the oldest settlements in the Golden Aue; the town was first mentioned in a document in 985. During the High Middle Ages, the historic town developed from Oberberga, Unterberga and Topfstedt. Until the Reformation, Berga was the seat of an archpriest and the centre of two Sedes districts in the Helmegau. Noble families established manor estates in Berga—another chapter in the town’s development.

Local work also has its history: in the late 19th century, Berga had a brickworks and numerous button-making businesses. The different eras tell the story of a town whose past reaches far beyond its first documentary mention.

Transport history around Berga

A new road was built from 1826 as the Halle-Kasseler-Caussee; today it is designated L 151. In 1877, Berga gained a railway connection via Berga/Kelbra station. These historical details offer insight into the town’s transport development. Check the current timetable when planning your journey.

Wetland, birdlife and cherry hills

Since 1978, the Helmestausee has been an internationally important wetland, including in a cross-border context. Around 50 bird species regularly breed in the protected area, with a further 25 doing so irregularly. For travellers interested in nature, this offers a special perspective on the region: here, the birdlife takes centre stage alongside the landscape.

On the reservoir’s southeastern shore, on the Saxony-Anhalt side, there is a lido and a restaurant. If you would like to include these in your plans, check their current status before visiting. Fruit growing has a centuries-old tradition in Rosperwenda, a district of Berga. The Rosperwenda cherry hills continue to shape the landscape today.

Hiking with different destinations

An approximately 11-kilometre hike to Heimkehle passes through Berga and via Berga-Kelbra station. A well-maintained hiking trail runs along the slope of the Schabeleite as far as Heimkehle. Another hike follows the Thyra to Bösenrode. This gives you different options for planning your walks: Heimkehle as the destination for a route of specified length, or Bösenrode along the Thyra. Before setting out, check current trail conditions and navigation information.

If you are travelling with your family, different interests may guide your choice: birdlife, local history and hiking each offer a different focus. Decide what matters most to you during your stay, and use that to guide your search for accommodation in Berga.

Mansfeld-SĂĽdharz: other distinct themes

If you are considering the wider destination of Mansfeld-Südharz beyond Berga, you can include other places of interest in your travel plans. In Eisleben, the houses where Martin Luther was born and died are among the Luther sites. In Klostermansfeld stands St. Mary’s Church: it was probably built around 1140 as a three-aisled Romanesque basilica for a Benedictine monastery; 1170 is considered its official founding year. The church is part of the Romanesque Road.

Historic narrow-gauge trains run several times a year on special occasions along the route between Klostermansfeld and Hettstedt. In Questenberg, the Questenfest is celebrated every year at Pentecost. It is considered a continuation of a Germanic solstice cult thought to date back thousands of years. If you would like to include these regional events in your plans, check the relevant dates and the current festival programme.
