There are several ways to discover Hermsdorf/Erzgebirge: the Great Circular Hiking Trail leads through the Köhlergrund valley to the Gimmlitz spring, while hiking and cycling trails, winter sports, mountain meadows and traditional rural crafts all shape the experiences available to visitors. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether outdoor activities, winter sports, or insights into farming and life in the mountains should be your main focus.

Hiking and Cycling Around Hermsdorf

The 17.5-kilometre Great Circular Hiking Trail Hermsdorf/E. starts in Neuhermsdorf and is rated moderately difficult. It leads through the Köhlergrund valley, along the “Tree of the Year” avenue and to the Gimmlitz spring. The return route passes the “Schickelshöhe” viewpoint. The trail is marked in white-green-white and white-yellow-white. Allow about 4 hours and 50 minutes for the hike; this gives you an idea of how much time to set aside for the circuit during your stay.

In addition, numerous hiking and cycling trails run around and through the villages of Hermsdorf/Erzgebirge. These include the Kammweg ridge trail and the international Eisenach–Budapest long-distance cycle route. Alongside the specifically described circular hike, there are therefore other routes to choose from when planning different outings. Check trail conditions before setting off.

Cross-Country Ski Trails, Ski Lift and Rides with the Liebscher Farm

Hermsdorf/Erzgebirge has a network of cross-country ski trails for winter sports, including the popular Bahndammloipe. Whether the trails are groomed depends on conditions. The “Im Richtergrund” ski lift is the longest ski lift in the Osterzgebirge and has a fun park for snowboarders and freeskiers. Its operation is seasonal and may change. Check current conditions before planning a winter outing.

There is also a special option for group activities outside winter: the Liebscher Farm offers rides in a horse-drawn carriage; sleigh rides are also available. Check in advance whether your preferred ride is available and how to book it.

Rural Heritage and Mountain Meadows

The Farm and Local History Museum in Hermsdorf focuses on agricultural and craft heritage. Farming equipment, household items and tools from an extensive collection offer insights into how mountain farmers made their living. A visit to the museum thus complements time outdoors with a cultural and historical perspective on life in the region.

Mountain meadows are also part of the rural character of the area: the Liebscher Farm manages around 40 hectares of mountain meadows around the source of the Weißbach stream. The Weißbach valley is part of the protected “Obere Wilde Weißeritz” FFH area. These two features of the landscape make nature and agriculture distinct themes alongside the trails and winter sports on offer.

Find the Right Accommodation for Your Travel Plans

The kind of pace you want for your trip can be a useful starting point when choosing accommodation. A stay focused on a longer hike will look different from one where you plan to spend time on cross-country ski trails and at the ski lift, or make more time for the museum and landscape. If your group has different interests, you can weigh these priorities against one another. This way, you can tailor your accommodation search to the kind of days you want to spend in Hermsdorf/Erzgebirge.
