Altenberg combines traces of tin mining with a strong winter sports profile. This makes the town appealing to travelers who do not see culture and activity as separate pursuits: one day can be devoted to mining history, another to cross-country ski trails, slopes or toboggan runs.

Traces of tin mining

The tin ore deposit discovered at Alten Berg in 1440 is considered the largest in Central Europe. A mine collapse in January 1620 created the Pinge, a landmark of Altenberg’s mining history. Museums and mining sites in Altenberg and Zinnwald document the history of mining in the region. At sites associated with the UNESCO Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region, children can earn a mining diploma.

Leisure activities include traditional Hutznabende and a Mettenschicht. Specific dates and availability may vary.

Winter in Altenberg

Altenberg is considered a center of winter sports in Saxony and Germany’s “tobogganing capital.” The winter sports area includes six lifts and slopes up to 1,500 meters long. There are also groomed cross-country ski trails, ski touring routes, toboggan runs and snowshoe hikes. This offers a range of winter activities: lifts and slopes, cross-country skiing, hiking in the snow and tobogganing. Winter activities and their operating conditions are seasonal; check them before making specific plans.

Gardens, ponds and mountain meadows

The Schellerhau Botanical Garden features around 1,400 outdoor plant species. Seasonal alpine flora and a nature-and-music sound trail define the garden; guided tours focusing on the garden, sound and herbs are available on request. The Galgenteiche are among Germany’s oldest artificial ponds and reservoirs, created by mining. Botanical diversity and traces of mining history are thus presented as distinct themes.

A footpath through mountain meadows leads to the Kohlhaukuppe mountain lodge. An observation tower there offers panoramic views; check access conditions before your visit. The menu includes garlic soup, garlic bread, garlic ice cream and garlic beer. The food and drink selection may change. The children’s tour through Altenberg also offers a special way to explore the town: it is suitable for strollers and wheelchair users, although surface conditions may vary.

Getting there and choosing accommodation

Altenberg is served by the Dresden–Heidenau–Altenberg railway line, as well as bus routes 360 from Dresden Central Station and 398 from Teplice. The tourist information office is located in the former railway station at the central bus and rail interchange. The same station houses a cross-country ski center where skiers can change, use lockers and freshen up after a trip. This facility may be available seasonally. Check the timetable before traveling.

If winter sports are your priority, take seasonal operating conditions into account; a request is required for a garden tour. Your day plan should also take account of the relevant routes and transport connections for your specific destinations.
