Crottendorf can be explored through two distinct themes: trails along the Zschopau and the Ore Mountains’ incense cone craft. The Zschopau Valley cycling and hiking trail passes through the town; Crottendorf’s Incense Cone Land adds a cultural dimension with its museum and workshops. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between a day on the move, a craft experience and other destinations in the Erzgebirgskreis district.

Along the Zschopau and on the Höhenweg

The Zschopau Valley cycling and hiking trail passes through Crottendorf, following a former railway line beside the young Zschopau. Signposted connections point to local hiking destinations and sights. The former railway line and the river are prominent landmarks; the signposts can also help you find your way to other destinations. Bear in mind that trail conditions and signage may change.

Experience the craft of incense cone making

Crottendorf’s Incense Cone Land houses a museum inside a 15-metre-high replica of an incense cone. In the workshops, visitors can make traditional Ore Mountains incense cones themselves. This combines looking around with hands-on craftwork. Advance booking may be required for workshops.

Hiking and culture in the Erzgebirgskreis district

The Erzgebirgskreis district has a signposted hiking trail network covering around 4,500 kilometres. This regional setting offers many opportunities to include hiking in your travel plans. The Ore Mountains/Krušnohoří Mining Region has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2019. Seiffen is regarded as the birthplace of Ore Mountains folk art and offers another perspective on the region’s craft traditions.

The Ore Mountains Open-Air Museum in the spa town of Seiffen showcases historic buildings and workshops from the 19th and early 20th centuries. At its heart is the original, preserved Preißler turning workshop, powered by water. The historic buildings and workshops give the visit a distinctive cultural and historical focus; the preserved turning workshop places a specific part of Ore Mountains craft history at its centre. The term “turning workshop” refers to turning techniques; “water-powered” names the source of power for the preserved workshop and explains its technical distinction.

There are also various reference points for hikes across the wider region. The Schwarzenberg Panorama Trail is a 13.8-kilometre circular hike over the hills around Schwarzenberg and takes about 4 hours and 5 minutes. Panorama trails around Schneeberg, Schwarzenberg and Zwönitz offer views of their historic town centres. Fichtelberg, near Oberwiesenthal, is 1,215 metres high and the highest mountain in Saxony. The Otto Peuschel Höhenweg near Liebenstein is shorter, at about two kilometres, than the 13.8-kilometre loop near Schwarzenberg, which takes about four hours and five minutes.
