Discover Mildenau through its settlement pattern and landscape: the village developed as a Waldhufendorf, a type of forest-strip village whose three- and four-sided farmsteads were built halfway up the mountain slopes. Distinctive hedgerow landscapes and views towards the Preßnitztal, Rauschenbachtal and Pöhlatal valleys shape the setting. Together, these features offer different ways to spend your stay, from exploring local history to following trails through the landscape.

Routes for Different Plans

The Annaberger Landring is a cycling and hiking route around 55 kilometres long. A cross-connection divides it into a northern and a southern loop, each around 30 kilometres long. The Rosehip Trail offers a different scale: at around 10 kilometres long, it is suitable for hiking and cycling. The Rosehip Trail is therefore considerably shorter than either of the two loops of the Annaberger Landring.

The Rosehip Trail runs between Mildenau, Geyersdorf and Königswalde, crossing fields and following old farm tracks; viewpoints such as the Pöhlberg lie along the way. Information boards along the trail cover local flora and fauna. The route thus combines exercise with insights into nature and the landscape, while the Annaberger Landring offers a wider choice of distances with its two loops.

Landscape, Nature and Seasonal Activities

The Arnsfeld Tree Trail also turns the focus to nature: information boards explain native trees and shrubs. In the village district of Arnsfeld, there are also groomed cross-country ski trails and a ski lift. Winter sports conditions depend on the season; check current conditions before your visit. Mildenau outdoor swimming pool is located on Freibadtalstraße. Opening times and operations vary by season and should be taken into account when planning.

Local History Along Trails and at Historic Buildings

The Evangelical Church in Mildenau was built between 1834 and 1839 and is a protected cultural monument. The History Trail runs for 2.89 kilometres through Mildenau. It features twelve carved, text-inscribed panels as well as 50 ceramic panels depicting historic buildings. These different forms of presentation make the trail a way to explore the history of the village and its architecture.

The Mildenau Mining Trail can offer insights into the village’s historic mining industry. Mildenau once had around 230 mine tunnels and pits. Together with the History Trail, the Mining Trail provides another perspective on the village’s past.

Cultural Context in the Erzgebirgskreis

The wider travel destination of the Erzgebirgskreis has a signposted hiking trail network around 4,500 kilometres long. There is also plenty to discover culturally beyond Mildenau: the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2019. Traditional crafts in the Ore Mountains include Reifen drehen (ring turning) and Spanbaumstechen (wood shaving). Demonstration workshops in the region let visitors watch pyramids, Schwibbogen candle arches, smoking figurines and angels being made. The Seiffen Open-Air Museum of the Ore Mountains displays historic buildings and workshops from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Its centrepiece is the original, well-preserved Preißler’sche Drehwerk, a water-powered lathe in the spa town of Seiffen.
