Stollberg combines historic churches and cultural venues with opportunities to take part and explore, as well as trails through the surrounding countryside. You can choose different themes for your trip: architectural history, theatre, exploring the old town, or a tour by bike and on foot. These different topics offer starting points for planning your stay around your interests.

Churches and history in Stollberg

St. Mary's Church is the oldest building in the town. It is also known as Sankt Marienkirche and Beatae Virginis Mariae; the name “Totenkirche” is also commonly used. This historic monument was built in the Romanesque style. A distinctive historical feature is the painting on the ceiling and vault ribs: it was uncovered during restoration and is unique in Saxony.

St. James's Church is also part of the town centre's character. As the market church, it is dedicated to the Apostle James and is also known as Stollberg Market Church or Jakobikirche. Its imposing tower has watched over the market square for centuries. Together, the two churches offer different starting points for exploring Stollberg's architectural and urban history.

Since 2024, the Stalburc area has been home to a permanent exhibition about the Hoheneck Women's Prison memorial site. It commemorates women who were persecuted for political reasons and imprisoned at Hoheneck. Alongside the town's older architectural history, engaging with this historical commemoration is another theme you can explore in Stollberg.

Culture, theatre and discovery

At Theater Burattino, theatre lovers aged 6 to 99 can take part in theatre activities in their free time. There is also an arts education programme for children and young people. If you are looking for a cultural activity to participate in during your trip, the theatre is one option to consider.

At Phänomenia, the focus is on discovery and exploration. Interactive and exciting experiences enrich the learning process there. Its focus differs from the churches' historical themes: here, you experience learning content through exploration and interaction.

BĂĽrgergarten in the centre of Stollberg is a cultural centre in an Arts and Crafts Jugendstil style. It provides a venue for a wide range of events, including concerts and shows as well as trade fairs, conferences and exhibitions. Company presentations and wedding celebrations are also held there. Its diverse programme complements the town's individual cultural and visitor attractions.

Old town and trails around the town

There is a historic walking route through Stollberg's old town, as well as guided town tours. A 360° tour also lets you explore the town from afar. You can choose between a walk, a guided tour and a digital impression, depending on how you would like to discover Stollberg's local history.

The Green Trail Stollberg is a circular route over 20 km long. It passes several municipal parks, orchards and bodies of water, as well as the Phänomenia learning and discovery centre and the environmental education centre of the Stollberg Beekeepers' Association in Mitteldorf. The route therefore connects various landscape features with named learning and visitor attractions. By summer 2026, it had been equipped as part of an award-winning simul+ creative project with numerous habitats for wild insects, benches, information boards and an energy-independent bicycle charging station.

A shorter way to explore the area by bike is the Stollberg Reservoir Cycling Loop. It is 10.6 km long, mostly paved and of moderate difficulty. From the town centre, the route passes the Querenbach Reservoir and runs through Bürgerwald; from Goldene Höhe, it leads back to town with a scenic view. Unlike the Green Trail, which is over 20 km long, this route's shorter distance is clearly specified. Its surface and difficulty level are also provided to help with planning.

Planning your stay

If you are planning your accommodation and excursions together, your preferred themes can help you decide: would you mainly like to explore churches and cultural attractions, or include one of the routes described as well? At Kulturbahnhof, visitors can get information about accommodation, places to visit, hiking and cycling routes, and events in Stollberg and the surrounding area.
