Wildenthal – in the Valley of the Große Bockau
Accommodation in Wildenthal
Wildenthal, together with Oberwildenthal, lies in the deeply cut valley of the Große Bockau at about 720 m above sea level, directly at the foot of the 1,018 m-high Auersberg. The river valley and the mountain provide two clear reference points in the landscape. Between Wildenthal and Eibenstock, the Natura 2000 site “Valley of the Große Bockau” contains valuable mixed beech forest stands. The area around the village thus brings together a deeply cut valley and a protected woodland as distinct natural features.
Local history at the Saafnlob House
The local history museum at the Saafnlob House in Wildenthal was assembled by the local heritage association. It covers Goethe and Charlotte von Stein’s coach journey through Wildenthal. Stephan Dietrich, known as “Saafnlob” and a local poet from the Ore Mountains, is also among the figures featured. These subjects offer different ways to explore local history: a journey through Wildenthal and the life of a regional poet. Visitors wishing to include culture in their stay will find a concrete point of interest here.
The ditch branches off from the Große Bockau not far from Wildenthal cemetery. Today, it runs as a path through meadows and the village, past the Schwibbogen arch and on to the park. Its course through the local landscape therefore differs from the museum’s subject matter.
Hiking with different destinations
Two hikes with clearly different formats are designated for Wildenthal. The 4.4 km loop on the Dorfring route goes around the village. The 8.9 km out-and-back hike starts in Wildenthal, climbs the 1,018 m-high Auersberg and returns. This lets you compare a village loop with a route that has a mountain as its destination. On Stage 11 of the Kammweg from Johanngeorgenstadt to Weitersglashütte, the descent follows the next 2.5 kilometres along the Schlangenweg into Wildenthal, nearly 300 metres lower down. Hiking conditions depend on the season.
The Karlsroute also takes a different course: it passes through Wildenthal and Oberwildenthal, climbs to the border at the pass and continues to Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad). It is therefore a cross-border route to consider when planning, while the two designated hikes have different destinations around Wildenthal.
Seasonal experiences and excursions
The ski slope in Wildenthal, known as the “Rölzhang,” is just under 100 m long and not very steep; seasonal operations may vary. Wildenthal’s Hammerfest, held on the second weekend in August, commemorates the village’s long hammer-mill tradition. If you would like to plan your stay around the event, check the programme for the relevant year.
Near Wildenthal, the Auersberg Nature Activity Garden offers seven stations and seven puzzles. Another option is described on the “Off to the first summer retreat in the Ore Mountains” tour between Eibenstock and Wildenthal: on the descent through the valley of the Ehrethausbach, a Kneipp facility on an idyllic meadow is recommended as a short, refreshing break. Both destinations complement the local history and hiking routes with their own excursion themes.
If you are planning a trip with a group, it can help to compare everyone’s interests: the museum and ditch focus on local history, the designated hikes differ as a circular route and a mountain hike, and the ski slope and Hammerfest are tied to the season or a specific date. This selection can help you find accommodation in Wildenthal that suits your planned activities, without letting any one theme define your stay.
