Eibenstock between mining history and nature experiences
Accommodation in Eibenstock
Eibenstock combines mining history and Ore Mountain design with trails, water experiences and activities for a range of holiday itineraries. The Schatzhaus Erzgebirge explores the history of settlement, tin and iron ore mining, traditional crafts and Ore Mountain folk art. Life-size wooden figures in the market square tell the stories of people from the town’s past. For those who want to explore the outdoors, there are options for different time frames, from an approximately one-hour mining heritage trail to longer hikes.
Mining history and Ore Mountain design
The Schatzhaus Erzgebirge Museum presents local settlement history, tin and iron ore mining, traditional crafts and Ore Mountain folk art. Demonstrations include historic embroidery machines. A visit brings together different aspects of regional history, from mining and craft techniques to forms of folk art.
The sculpture park in the market square features life-size wooden figures around the walk-through tin caterpillar. They depict historical figures who lived and worked there during the time of Clara Angermann and the famine of 1770 to 1772; information boards explain their stories. The figures were created for the Clara Angermann anniversary in 2025 and are on display for visitors. The combination of figures, the walk-through tin caterpillar and information boards also makes the market square a place where the town’s history unfolds through specific scenes.
The mining heritage trail offers a different way to explore the area. It leads through a historic mining landscape, where mining remains and information boards explain the history of the region. The trail is 1.5 kilometres long and takes about an hour. It is an easy way to combine a manageable walk with insights into mining history.
Water, activities and creative experiences
The family area at Badegärten Eibenstock includes a 106-metre water slide, a heated outdoor pool and water play activities for children. There are also themed sauna experiences drawing on Russian and Finnish traditions, as well as Eibenstock beer baths and Italian, Indian, Japanese and oriental traditions. Check the latest opening information before your visit.
The Kunsthof offers something different. The Kunsthaus provides space for concerts, dance, yoga, seminars, discussions, exhibitions and creative classes. The Kunstcafé serves single-origin coffees, chocolate specialties, drinking chocolate, tea and ice cream. The ice cream is supplied by Café Richter in Sosa. As the programme and café offerings may change, it is worth checking the latest information before your visit.
Donkey trekking is an option for a shared activity with children: adults lead the animals, and no riding experience is required. The Auersberg Nature Activity Garden has seven stations with hands-on activities and quiz questions.
Choose trails to suit your time and interests
At 1,018 metres, the Auersberg is a distinctive destination with further hiking opportunities nearby. Its stone observation tower was built in 1860; from the tower, views extend towards the Vogtland and the Bohemian Ore Mountains. There are more than 400 kilometres of marked hiking and nature trails around the Auersberg, including the Kammweg.
For a longer outing, the Three Reservoirs Hiking Trail, which passes through Eibenstock, is a different proposition from the mining heritage trail: the route is 40.5 kilometres long and links forest paths, reservoir views, natural features and churches. It can be completed as a two- to three-day hike or as a pilgrimage route. This gives hikers a choice between a short themed trail and a multi-day tour.
Individual trails also offer practical guidance for planning. The Wurzelrudis Gerstenberg circular trail is a family-friendly loop on easy forest roads, suitable for pushchairs and children’s bikes. It is 10 kilometres long, or 8 kilometres from the Badegärten car park. When planning, take into account seasonal changes in trail conditions and possible updates to route information. The Wurzelrudis Water Education Trail is 4.5 kilometres long and starts at the hiking car park on the B 283.
If you prefer to explore by bike, you can reach the Sosa Reservoir Loop from Eibenstock via approximately two kilometres of the Auersberg Loop. The Carlsfeld Reservoir Loop starts in Carlsfeld. It crosses the dam crest of Germany’s highest drinking-water reservoir and continues along the ridge of the Ore Mountains towards the German-Czech border. The two routes offer different ways to explore the surrounding area by bike.
Fairy-tale trails and the wider region
The Wurzelrudis Fairy-Tale Trail in Eibenstock features fairy-tale houses and wooden figures. QR codes let visitors listen to or read the stories. A leaflet for the fairy-tale trail includes a map of Eibenstock and a small prize competition; check in advance whether the leaflet is available. You can explore the route through its stories and use the map to find your way.
The wider Erzgebirgskreis district has a signposted hiking trail network of about 4,500 kilometres. The Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2019. These details place Eibenstock in a broader regional context, while local trails and activities have their own points of interest.
This way, you can choose activities to suit the pace you want for your day rather than simply working through a list.
