Leipzig combines musical history and urban culture with expansive green spaces and extraordinary natural environments. The Bach Museum and St Thomas Church offer different ways to explore Johann Sebastian Bach, while Gondwanaland focuses on tropical rainforest environments. Parks, the city harbour and large-scale panoramic art round out the programme. When choosing your accommodation, it can help to first consider whether cultural attractions, a visit to a park or activities on the water will shape your stay.

Bach, churches and Leipzig’s history

The Bach Museum Leipzig is housed in the Bosehaus on St Thomas Churchyard. Its interactive, sound-based exhibition covers 450 square metres. Twelve themed rooms explore Bach’s life and work, his family and research. Music, biography and the history of knowledge thus come together in a single museum visit. The theme can be paired with a visit to St Thomas Church: built as a monastery church in 1212, it is Bach’s final resting place and was his workplace for 27 years.

Motets are held at St Thomas Church every Friday and Saturday. Check the current schedule before your visit. The church also provides pilgrim passports for the Ecumenical Pilgrimage Route, which runs through Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. Availability and fees may change; check in advance if needed. The “Leipzig, Thomaskirche” stop is served by tram line 9 and bus routes 89 and 412. As routes may change, it is worth checking the current timetable before travelling.

St Nicholas Church offers a different perspective on history: it is associated with peace prayers and Monday demonstrations during the Peaceful Revolution of 1989. The “Runde Ecke” Memorial Museum presents the history of the Stasi in the preserved rooms of the former Leipzig district headquarters. The Bach Museum, churches and memorial each highlight different aspects of Leipzig’s musical and contemporary history.

Urban green spaces and culture under the open sky

Clara Zetkin Park is Leipzig’s largest park and brings together the historic park areas of Johannapark, Palmengarten, Volkspark Scheibenholz and Albertpark. In summer, concerts and open-air cinema are held at the open-air stage; the seasonal programme may change, so check the dates. The park is also home to the Music Pavilion, built in 1912 for open-air orchestra concerts. Here, historic park areas and open-air cultural events offer a different focus from the museums and churches.

Rainforest environments, waterways and panoramic art

Gondwanaland showcases tropical rainforest environments from Africa, Asia and South America under one roof. It is home to almost 170 exotic animal species and around 500 plant species. Visitors can explore the area along jungle trails, a treetop walkway and a jungle river. A boat trip along the river passes through a cave. You can also watch giant otters swimming in Gondwanaland’s waterway; when the animals can be seen naturally varies.

Leipzig City Harbour offers several ways to explore the city’s waterways: motorboat trips, guided canoe and dragon boat tours, canoe and bicycle hire, as well as combined Bike&Boat trips. Guided tours and rentals offer different ways to enjoy activities on the water and by bicycle.

The Panometer Leipzig presents large-scale, immersive panoramic art. The “City Centre Tour – Leipzig on Foot” offers another perspective on the city: the tour takes you through the historic city centre and introduces key sights. A large-scale work of art and a tour through the historic urban landscape therefore offer two different ways to discover Leipzig. The tour format and app availability may change; check the latest information in advance.

If musical and contemporary history are your main interests, the Bach landmarks, churches and the “Runde Ecke” give your stay a clear focus. If you would rather explore green spaces, animal and plant life or activities on the water, there are other options to consider. These interests can help guide your search for accommodation during your stay in Leipzig.
