Frohburg combines a long history of castles with pottery craftsmanship and trails through nature. Frohburg Castle is the town’s oldest building; hiking and cycling routes also lead into the countryside around the town.

The Castle and Its Long Building History

Today’s four-wing castle complex developed from a stone structure dating to around 1200. In the 16th century, the four-wing complex was built using three medieval tower structures from the 13th century. The castle’s architectural history thus brings together early stone beginnings and reused medieval building elements. The Frohburg Museum has been housed in the castle since 1974.

Church, Fountain and Pottery Craftsmanship

St. Michaelis was first mentioned in 1233; the sacristy is probably its oldest part. In 1877, the church was completely remodelled inside and out in the Neo-Gothic style. The altar area contains nine oil paintings of Frohburg’s pastors, dating from 1613 to 1849. The Centaur Fountain has adorned Frohburg’s market square since 1899.

The Pottery Museum hosts temporary exhibitions by artists and craftspeople from the region; the programme changes. In Frohburg’s district of Kohren-Sahlis, pottery workshops showcase traditional craftsmanship and sell regional products. The changing exhibitions and pottery tradition thus offer distinct cultural highlights.

Hiking and Experiencing Nature

There are two similarly long hiking options, each with different features. The 13.45-kilometre “Nature and Culture – Frohburg” route is classified as an easy circular walk and starts and ends at Frohburg station. Another hiking trail is 14 kilometres long, loops around Frohburg and passes the Eschefelder Teiche Nature Reserve. The station and difficulty rating are key points of reference for the first loop; on the second trail, the route through the nature reserve shapes the walk.

The Eschefelder Teiche Nature Reserve is home to more than 100 bird species and includes lush river meadows. The 14-kilometre trail therefore combines its route around Frohburg with a specific connection to the landscape and birdlife. Routes may change; check the latest information before setting out.

Cycle Through Streitwald to Frohburg

The Wyhratal Cycle Route is 29.37 kilometres long and classified as easy. It passes through the Streitwald Nature Reserve before reaching Frohburg; within the town, it goes past St. Michaelis. Frohburg is also a rail access point for this cycle route. At 29.37 kilometres, the cycling route is considerably longer than the two hiking trails, which are around 14 kilometres long.

Getting There and Planning

Frohburg can be reached from Leipzig by S-Bahn in about an hour or a little less. Journey times and services may change, so check the latest timetable before travelling. The “Nature and Culture – Frohburg” station loop also starts and ends at the station, while Frohburg is also a rail access point for the Wyhratal Cycle Route.
