Discover Diera-Zehren between the Elbe and the vineyards
Accommodation in Diera-Zehren
Diera-Zehren brings together landscapes along the banks of the Elbe, historic sites and opportunities for active days. Six circular routes and the Elbe Cycle Route make for an activity-filled trip; St. Michaelis in Zehren and Schieritz Castle add local history with clearly established dates. This lets you plan your stay around the experiences that interest you most.
Landscape between the Elbe, vineyards and forest
The landscape for walks and bike rides includes Elbe floodplains and valleys, vineyards, striking quarry formations and Golkwald forest, covering about 200 hectares. This combination offers a variety of ways to enjoy the outdoors without committing to a particular route. If you enjoy walking, you can compare the lengths of the circular routes; for a bike ride, the Elbe Cycle Route offers a route of its own.
Six easy circular routes
Diera-Zehren has six easy circular routes: Löbsal is 5 kilometres long, Nieschütz 10 kilometres, Diera 6.5 kilometres, Zadel 6 kilometres, Zehren 11 kilometres and Hebelei 6.5 kilometres. The selection ranges from Löbsal, the shortest, to Zehren, the longest of the routes listed. The other routes fall between these lengths. All six are rated easy. Check the local trail signs before setting out.
Cycling along the Elbe
The Elbe Cycle Route passes through Diera-Zehren between Meißen and Riesa. The Niederlommatzsch–Diesbar-Seußlitz ferry allows you to cross the Elbe. As ferry services may be seasonal or change, check the current operating schedule before your ride. This lets you take a possible ferry crossing into account when planning your day without assuming that it is always available.
Hebelei Park is also located along the Elbe Cycle Route. It has around 100 animals and enclosures for about 20 species, as well as a biotope pond, a playground and a petting enclosure. Its different areas give the park a character distinct from hikes and bike rides along the routes. If you would like to visit, check the current operating details in advance.
Church and castle as historic highlights
St. Michaelis Church in Zehren is late Baroque and was completed in 1787. A chapel at the site is documented as early as 1316. The interior of the present-day church is simple and bright. This brings together a long history of worship at the site and a church building whose date is clearly established. Access to the interior may vary; check before visiting.
Schieritz Castle stands about 40 metres above the Ketzerbach valley and was the origin of the village of Schieritz. It was built between 1556 and 1601. In contrast to the history of St. Michaelis, the focus here is not only on the construction period but also on the castle’s connection with the origins of the village. The two sites offer different perspectives on cultural history, without requiring the same kind of outing to be the focus.
Culture and culinary experiences in the wider Meißen destination
The wider Meißen destination also offers its own cultural and culinary attractions. The exhibition at Albrechtsburg Castle in Meißen introduces visitors to the castle’s history through virtual productions and interactive media stations. As exhibition displays may change, check the current information before visiting. At the visitor centre of the Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen, you can see how Meissen porcelain is shaped and painted. Meissen wine can be sampled in the city of Meißen and in the surrounding Elbe wine villages along the river.
The attractions in Meißen listed here are part of the wider destination and offer their own cultural and culinary experiences.
