Käbschütztal combines geological features with rural architectural heritage and regional history. In Leutewitz, a former quarry reveals impressive rhyolite columns; elsewhere, historic farmsteads, churches and museums are among the attractions. Circular trails offer further perspectives on the landscape. You can tailor your stay to the experiences that interest you most: geological discoveries, cultural history or a hike through the Lommatzscher Pflege.

Landscape, Geology and Circular Trails

Parts of Käbschütztal lie within the “Täler südöstlich Lommatzsch” FFH area. One of its sub-areas is the “Ketzer- und Käbschützbachtal”. The former quarry north of Leutewitz village pond offers a close-up look at the geology. Around 20 metres of rhyolite are exposed there. Large columns with varying inclinations give the outcrop its distinctive appearance. A smaller geological outcrop near Käbschütz railway station shows horizontal layering alongside a porphyritic volcanic texture.

The geological walk in Leutewitz is two kilometres each way and is rated easy. By car, the described route runs from the A14, exit 37 Nossen-Ost, via the B 101 to Krögis and then along the K8031 to Leutewitzer Teich. By public transport, you can reach the starting point by taking the S1 from Dresden Hauptbahnhof to Meißen, then bus 417 to Leutewitz Gutshof. Check the timetable before travelling.

The Käbschütztal circular trail offers views across the rolling countryside of the Lommatzscher Pflege and passes the park and pond at Sornitz Castle. Its length is given as around 15.3 kilometres; a distance of 17.7 kilometres is also listed. If you plan to take the trail, compare these figures with the route description you intend to use.

Rural Architecture and Museums

The area’s rural heritage is reflected in manor houses and preserved four-sided and three-sided farmsteads. Käbschütztal’s attractions also include the Evangelical Lutheran churches in Krögis and Planitz, the Löthain narrow-gauge railway museum, the Park der Generationen in Niederjahna and the “Glückauf-Schacht” mining museum in Mehren. The Rittergut Barnitz museum displays historical furnishings and a small polytechnic cabinet. The selection ranges from religious and agricultural architecture to the history of technology and mining.

The region’s raw materials also tell the story of its economy and crafts: the extraction of clay and kaolin helped drive the development of the ceramics industry. Kaolin from Seilitz was used to make porcelain. For those interested in how regional products came about, this offers another way to explore the area’s history, alongside the insights provided by farmsteads, manor houses and museums.

Wine and Regional Discoveries

The circular trail leads to a stop at Mauna vineyard, where you can take a break at a traditional seasonal wine tavern (Besenwirtschaft). Check whether it is open before your visit. Organic viticulture was practised at Mauna vineyard from 2019; if this farming method matters to you, it is worth checking its current status.

The wider travel destination of Meißen adds its own cultural and culinary experiences to the selection. The exhibition at Albrechtsburg Castle in Meißen uses virtual displays and interactive media stations to tell the castle’s story. At the visitor centre of the State Porcelain Manufactory Meissen, you can see how Meissen porcelain is shaped and painted. You can sample Meissen wine in the city of Meißen and in the surrounding Elbe wine villages along the river. The Saxon Wine Trail links Pirna, Dresden, Radebeul, Meißen and Diesbar-Seußlitz over around 90 kilometres.
