Castle history, city life and nature experiences shape Glauchau in different ways. The castle complex is one of the largest in Saxony and dates back to the first half of the 16th century. Paths through the castle park pass old trees and offer views of Forderglauchau Castle and Hinterglauchau Castle. Together with its cultural venues, reservoir and green spaces, the city offers a variety of ways to tailor your stay to your interests.

Castles, historic centre and culture

The historic marketplace is at the heart of the old town. Cultural and historical sights and architecturally significant buildings characterise this part of Glauchau. Weekly markets and fresh produce markets are held in the square, along with the annual Christmas market and city festival. If you would like to plan a market or event into your trip, check the dates for your visit.

The Glauchau castles are also cultural venues: as a cultural centre, they host events across a range of genres. The underground galleries, which are part of Glauchau’s cultural heritage, offer another way to explore the city’s history. Both add to a tour of the historic centre, so a visit need not be limited to architecture alone.

St. Georgen’s Church houses a surviving organ by Gottfried Silbermann, completed in 1730. Church, organ and tower tours can be booked through the parish office; contact them to arrange a time for your visit. The Bismarck Tower serves a dual purpose: it is both an observation tower and a water tower. The church and tower thus bring together different facets of Glauchau, from musical history to a building with a practical purpose.

Parks, forest and water

The castle park is considered probably the oldest park in Glauchau and dates back to the 18th century. Its paths pass old trees and offer views of both castles. The approximately 9.8-hectare GrĂĽndel Park continues the castle park as a natural extension. Walkers and cyclists use GrĂĽndel Park as a place to relax. In contrast to this compact park, RĂĽmpfwald is a much larger woodland: between Glauchau and Lichtenstein, it covers around 750 hectares and is the second-largest contiguous forest area in the Erzgebirge Basin. Numerous forest paths make it a popular local recreation and hiking area.

At the Glauchau Reservoir, open water meets a diverse range of wildlife. The lake covers 40 hectares and offers opportunities for sailing, canoeing and fishing, as well as tennis, archery, jogging, walking and cycling. A 3.2-kilometre circular trail leads through the natural landscape around the lake. This means you can choose between activities on the water, exercise on land and a walk through the landscape during your stay at the reservoir. If a particular activity is important to your plans, check the local conditions in advance.

Plan your stay around your interests

Glauchau’s sights and places to relax offer a range of options to help you plan. This lets you shape your choices around your travel itinerary without having to commit to just one type of outing.
