Mülsen: Leisure, History and Landscape
Accommodation in Mülsen
Mülsen combines leisure activities and local history with a landscape of gentle hills in the Ore Mountains foothills. When planning your trip, you can choose from a range of options: water and exercise, motorsports, insights into everyday and working life in the past, and churches and scenery. You can shape your stay around the things that interest you most, rather than limiting it to just one type of outing.
Water, motorsports and fun activities
Mülsen outdoor pool has swimming, non-swimming and baby pools, a children’s playground, a beach volleyball court, and food and drink options. One pool holds more than 3,400 cubic metres.
Arena E offers indoor races with electric karts and electric pit bikes. The outdoor track has variable lengths ranging from 450 to 1,315 metres; there, you can ride karts with combustion engines and electric pit bikes. So the first thing to consider when choosing between the options is whether you prefer indoor racing or the outdoor track with its variable lengths.
Genusshof offers a different range of activities: two escape rooms, a café, beach volleyball and an outdoor, tablet-guided scavenger hunt. There is also Pit Pat, a table-minigolf course with 18 holes. When planning your day, you can weigh up swimming, motorised activities, and puzzle- or skill-based activities.
Local history museum and churches
The Mülsen St. Niclas Local History Museum displays more than 1,000 exhibits reflecting the period around the turn of the 20th century. It also recreates family life in a typical home of a small-scale craftsperson or worker. Mining, crafts and agriculture represent important historical livelihoods in the Mülsengrund. The exhibits offer insights ranging from life at home to the work that shaped the region.
The churches also offer a range of historical points of interest. The Church of the Holy Cross in Ortmannsdorf was built in 1856 and has around 600 seats and two galleries. The village church in Thurm is one of Saxony’s three “Urbankirchen”; the Baroque church in Thurm was consecrated in 1731. The west tower has an open lantern 48 metres above the ground.
In Thurm, you can also visit the fully preserved milling machinery at Uhlig Mill by prior arrangement. This stop adds a technical subject to the churches and local history museum, and a visit explicitly requires an advance appointment.
Walks and trip planning
A walk through Mülsen St. Jacob can take in historic half-timbered houses, former headframes from the hard-coal mining industry, the spoil heap of Martin Hoop Works IV, and the steep, wooded eastern slope of the Mülsengrund. Built heritage from the town’s history sits alongside a striking feature of the landscape.
Mülsen has no direct rail connection. The nearest major railway stations are considered to be in Zwickau and Glauchau. If you are travelling by train, check the connections and station status again before your trip.
When looking for accommodation in Mülsen, you can first decide whether the outdoor pool and karting, the museum and churches, or walks should be the main focus of your stay. This helps you plan your trip around the experiences that interest you most in Mülsen.
