Rock, woodland and medieval history give Hartenstein its distinctive character. Prinzenhöhle Cave lies in Poppenwald Forest, north of the town; Stein Castle is a partly late Romanesque castle complex in the Zwickauer Mulde valley. Together, these places show how nature and cultural history can offer different focal points when planning a trip.

Rock Formations and Woodland Landscape

Prinzenhöhle is an accessible cave around 18 metres long. It was hewn into the rock as a medieval mining tunnel. A rocky, secured path leads past the “Zur Prinzenhöhle” forester’s lodge to the cave, making it possible to combine a visit with a walk through the landscape.

The protected landscape encompasses the Mulde valley from Stein Castle to Prinzenhöhle Cave. At its heart is Hartensteiner Wald Nature Reserve. Notable rock formations include Knoblauchfelsen and Prinzenhöhle. Large areas of woodland surround Hartenstein, and marked hiking trails provide access to the landscape. Those interested in nature and geology will find plenty to explore: woodland, protected landscapes and rock formations shape the character of an outing here.

Stein Castle: Architectural History and Museum

Stein Castle is a partly late Romanesque castle complex in the Zwickauer Mulde valley. The museum in the Upper Castle presents the stories of Hartenstein Castle and Stein Castle. The exhibition includes historical weapons, ring and plate armour, legal artefacts, an executioner’s sword and instruments of torture. The collection offers insights into various aspects of castle and legal history.

From the upper castle courtyard and the battlement, the view stretches across the castle complex and Hartensteiner Forst. The architecture, museum and views offer different points of interest: you can admire the castle as a structure, explore its history or take in the views across the complex and the forest.

Hartenstein’s old market square also tells the story of the town’s architectural history. There stands the “Weißes Roß” inn, a historic half-timbered building constructed in 1625. As a distinctive sight in its own right, the building adds another example of historic architecture to the medieval castle complex.

Hiking, Cycling and Getting Here

There are 100 kilometres of signposted hiking trails in the area around Stein Castle and Hartenstein station. The Mulde Cycle Path passes by Stein Castle. If you prefer to spend your days on foot, the length of the trail network can help you plan your route; for a cycling trip, the path’s route past the castle is a useful landmark.

You can reach Hartenstein via the Hartenstein exit on the A72, by bus or on the Erzgebirge Railway. If travelling by bus or train, check the current timetables. This will help you decide in advance which option best suits your travel plans.

Water and Your Own Priorities

Hartenstein Adventure Pool features a 53-metre water slide, two diving towers, three pools, a baby pool, a large sunbathing lawn, and sports and play facilities. Alongside caves, woodland and cultural history, a visit to the water offers another option for your itinerary. Check the current details of the facilities before your visit.

When looking for accommodation, it helps to first decide what experiences you are after: would you like to focus on nature, caves, rock formations and woodland; are you mainly interested in hiking and cycling trails; or would you like to explore the castle and museum? The historic inn on the old market square adds another local connection to Hartenstein’s architectural history.
