Gersdorf: St. Mary's Church, Tetzner Museum and Mining Trails
Accommodation in Gersdorf
Gersdorf lies at the foot of the Ore Mountains and developed as a typical Waldhufendorf, a linear forest-strip village, in the Hegebach valley. Church architecture, visual art, mining trails and brewing history offer the town a range of cultural and practical points of interest. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth considering whether you would like to focus on culture, hiking or the brewery.
Church Architecture, Organ and Tetzner Museum
St. Mary's Church was built in Gersdorf between 1862 and 1865 and houses a valuable Jehmlich organ. Its construction and organ connect a specific chapter of architectural history with a musical landmark. The Tetzner Museum is dedicated to the life and work of Gersdorf painter and graphic artist Heinz Tetzner, an Expressionist artist. The museum's permanent exhibition presents a cross-section of his work in oil paintings, watercolors and prints. Church architecture and visual art thus offer distinct cultural themes side by side.
The HessenmĂĽhle complex is thought to have originated around 1450 as a sheep farm and watermill. The Tetzner Museum is housed in the former mill wing. This brings together a former use whose date is only approximate and the display of Tetzner's work in a complex of buildings.
Circular Hiking Trail, Viewpoint and Outdoor Pool
The Steinkohlenweg (Coal Trail) is 18 kilometers long, signposted as a regional circular hiking trail, and passes through Oelsnitz/Erzgebirge, Hohndorf, Gersdorf and Lugau. The Gersdorf Mining Educational Trail includes a viewpoint with expansive views toward Oelsnitz. The two trails have different highlights: the Steinkohlenweg is defined by its loop and the towns it passes through, while the educational trail's highlight is its view. If you are looking for a circular route with a specified length, the Steinkohlenweg offers a concrete option.
Gersdorf's outdoor pool has a 50-meter competition pool, a diving tower, a water slide, a beach volleyball court and a separate children's pool. Following a mudslide in 2022, the pool remains closed until it is rebuilt. Keep this in mind when planning your activities.
GlĂĽckauf Brewery: Products and a Unique Space
The GlĂĽckauf Brewery shop sells the brewery's full range, along with beer-related gifts, bock beer truffles and chocolates featuring beer brands. Availability may change, so check before your visit. The BraustĂĽbchen is located in the converted old brewhouse. The original furnishings have been preserved, and seating is available in the old brewing kettle. The product range and the space's design are therefore two very different aspects of the brewery.
Getting There and Planning Your Trip
Gersdorf has no rail connection, but there are regular bus services from Hohenstein-Ernstthal. Check current services before your trip. The A4 and A72 motorways connect via the B180, about seven kilometers away. Road conditions and connections may change, so it is also advisable to check for updates. For bus travel, the service from Hohenstein-Ernstthal is the relevant option; by car, use the B180 and motorway access as your guide.
