Oberlungwitz between the Lungwitzbach, nature and motorsport

Oberlungwitz stretches for about seven kilometres along the upper reaches of the Lungwitzbach. The Lungscher Nature Trail begins at Henny Pond and leads directly into the Hirschgrund Landscape Conservation Area; information boards cover environmental and nature conservation topics. This gives the town a clear connection to nature alongside its historic heritage. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you would rather focus on nature, churches and local history, or motorsport.

Churches and architectural heritage

The abbey church was built between 1746 and 1748 and consecrated in 1749. It was designed in the style of an old village church and has two galleries. Its features include a small, two-manual Kreuzbach organ with mechanical cone chests, as well as a Baroque pulpit depicting Moses with the tablets of the Ten Commandments. Two old bells from the abbey church are now housed at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. The church’s architectural history and fittings thus meet a place of safekeeping outside Oberlungwitz.

St. Martin brings together different periods of construction: one section of the tower dates back to the Middle Ages, and the church was remodelled in 1804. The 45-metre-high tower offers views across Oberlungwitz, the surrounding area and the Ore Mountains. The church also has a large, three-manual Jehmlich organ. Historic three-sided and four-sided farmsteads recall Oberlungwitz’s earlier days as a farming village and add to the picture of its surviving architectural heritage.

The Lungscher StadtgeflĂĽster project draws attention to parts of local history that have disappeared. Information boards at important buildings and places tell these stories. Local history can therefore be encountered not only in surviving churches and farmsteads, but also in places where traces of the past are no longer present.

Crafts, transport routes and milestone

The tradition of stocking knitting is linked to the year 1731, when Samuel Uhlig acquired the town’s first stocking frame. Transport routes are also part of Oberlungwitz’s history. The historic post station stood on the old Franconian postal route, which ran from Chemnitz through Oberlungwitz to Lichtenstein. The Electoral Saxon milestone, now standing on the redesigned forecourt next to the Zur Post inn, is part of this transport history. Oberlungwitz also lay on a historic through road from Hof via Zwickau to Chemnitz, which brought heavy traffic and frequent troop movements.

Sachsenring: driving experiences and motorsport history

At the Sachsenring in Oberlungwitz, visitors can take part in car and motorcycle safety or sports driving programmes. These include drift and racetrack training, motorcycle cornering training, racetaxi rides, Formula and touring car drives, sidecar taxi rides and indoor karting. The circuit’s history also has several chapters: the old road circuit closed in 1990; six years later, the new centre was built between Hohenstein-Ernstthal and Oberlungwitz. Motorcycle World Championship races returned two years after it was built.

So first consider which topic interests you most in Oberlungwitz.
