Lohmen invites you to discover its landscapes and cultural history from different perspectives. The Bastei offers views across the Elbe Valley to the sandstone table mountains and Königstein Fortress; the church and castle wing add distinctive architectural touches, while the Lohmen Gorge and the Richard Wagner Monument offer other ways to experience the landscape and culture. From Lohmen, you can reach the Bastei on foot or by car via Bastei Road.

Bastei: Panoramas and stone-carved history

From the Bastei, the view extends across the Elbe Valley, the sandstone table mountains, the Elbe and Königstein Fortress. Alongside the vistas, there is a striking structure: the historic sandstone bridge with seven arches leads towards the former Neurathen Rock Castle. Here, expansive landscapes and architectural history take centre stage in the same place. You can plan to get there from Lohmen on foot or by car via Bastei Road.

The church and castle wing in Lohmen

Lohmen Church is an octagonal Baroque sandstone central-plan building, constructed between 1786 and 1789. Octagonal means having eight sides and describes the building’s distinctive shape. The protected interior includes an organ by Johann Christian Kayser, dating from 1789. The sandstone, architectural form and dated instrument make the church a tangible example of the town’s architectural history.

Lohmen Castle has a history spanning more than 500 years. Its restored wing now houses the municipal administration and library. Visitors can tour the wing during municipal office hours; check the opening hours before your visit. This connects the castle’s historical significance with its present-day municipal use.

Rocky landscapes, trails and culture

At Lohmen Gorge, rushing water, steep rock walls and walking paths shape the landscape. These elements create a different impression from the Bastei panorama: here, water and rock take centre stage, while there, the focus is on expansive views across the Elbe Valley. If you are looking for varied experiences, you can take these differences into account when planning, without treating the destinations as one combined experience.

The Richard Wagner Monument stands in Liebethaler Grund, on the first stage of the Painter’s Way. Created by Richard Guhr in 1933, the bronze sculpture is 12.5 metres tall and stands in a natural setting as a cultural monument. Its size and material create a striking contrast with the surrounding paths and rock walls. The Painter’s Way itself is exclusively a hiking trail; it cannot be explored by bicycle or e-bike.

When looking for accommodation in Lohmen, the kind of mix of landscapes and culture you want to experience can help guide your choice. If you want to visit the Bastei, you can plan to walk there from Lohmen or drive via Bastei Road. For a visit to the castle wing, however, the municipal administration’s opening hours are what matter. Check them in advance so you can fit your planned visit into your day.

The wider area: Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge district

In the wider Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge district destination, Saxon Switzerland National Park is Saxony’s only national park and Germany’s only rock national park. Trails also differ in how they are used: the Painter’s Way is for hiking only, while the Elbe Cycle Route runs for 40 kilometres through Saxon Switzerland. This distinction can be helpful when choosing between hiking and cycling as you plan a trip across the wider area.

Other attractions in the district range from nature to industrial heritage. The Altenberg Mining Museum gives an overview of the 550-year history of tin mining in Altenberg: its origins date back to around 1440, and mining ended when operations were shut down in 1991. The annual “Speciality Weeks” also take place in the Erzgebirge part of the district, celebrating the diversity of local cuisine. Alongside landscapes and trails, the wider region thus offers points of interest for cultural history and culinary interests.
