Discover Dippoldiswalde
Accommodation in Dippoldiswalde
Dippoldiswalde lies at the foot of the Eastern Ore Mountains between Dresden and Altenberg. The town is surrounded by the Dippoldiswalder Heide protected landscape area and the Malter Dam. Since 6 July 2019, Dippoldiswalde has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region. Mining history, local history and nature give a trip here a variety of possible focuses.
Mining history in the town
MiBERZ is housed in Dippoldiswalde Castle. Six vaulted rooms explain early technologies used to mine and process silver ore. The Dippoldiswalde World Heritage presentation complements this perspective with numerous media stations and virtual reality. You can encounter the subject of mining in a variety of ways: in the vaulted rooms, through multimedia, and along a circular route through the town.
The mining trail is a circular route through Dippoldiswalde’s medieval mining town. Seven stops are linked to archaeological research. Guided tours are also offered along the trail; check their availability before you arrive. Together, the stops and the explanations at MiBERZ offer different points of entry if you are interested in early silver-mining techniques.
Local history, crafts and art
The LOHGERBER MUSEUM & GALERIE Dippoldiswalde is located in a tannery built around 1750. The protected complex also includes a Baroque house and a faithfully reconstructed, three-storey tannery workshop. The permanent exhibitions explore tanning and the leather industry, local history, and fine art from the Eastern Ore Mountains. The museum thus broadens the focus from mining to another historic industry, as well as to art and local history.
Town walk and trails in the heathland
A walk of about one hour starts and ends at the Weißeritztalbahn station in Dippoldiswalde. Highlights along the way include the market square, town hall, Dippold figure, St. Mary and St. Lawrence Church, the castle, the former town wall and Polypark. The route connects squares, buildings and places of remembrance within the town. There are also marked hiking trails in the Dippoldiswalder Heide.
Getting here and bringing a bicycle
There are a small number of parking spaces at the Weißeritztalbahn station in Dippoldiswalde. Bicycles can be transported in the train’s luggage car. Check the latest information about parking and bringing bicycles before you travel, as availability and transport conditions may change. This allows you to consider the train journey, taking your bicycle and planning a town walk as different aspects of your trip.
Nature and water at Malter Dam
Nearby Malter Dam is a recreation area with a leisure pool, swimming spots, camping, boat hire, mini golf, beach volleyball, tennis courts, restaurants and cafés. The facilities on offer may change; check which amenities are available before visiting. The dam complements the town’s history and marked hiking trails with a focus on water and leisure activities.
When choosing where to stay, your preferred focus for the day can help: if mining, museums and the town walk are your priorities, focus your search on Dippoldiswalde. If you would like to include water-based activities, consider nearby Malter Dam as well. This lets you choose accommodation based on the experiences that matter most for your trip.
