Amrum brings together protected dune landscapes, the Wadden Sea and island culture. The island is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Wadden Sea; nature experiences and cultural history shape different aspects of a trip. Highlights include Amrumer Odde, paths through dunes and fields, and historic sites such as St. Clemens Church in Nebel. When looking for accommodation on Amrum, it may help to first consider whether nature, water sports or cultural history will play the biggest role in your stay.

Dunes, seabirds and waterscapes

The dunes from Norddorf to Wittdün are a nature reserve. The protected area at Amrumer Odde also has a special purpose: it serves as a resting and pupping site for harbour seals and grey seals. In the nature reserve, you can walk around the dunes, with views reaching as far as Föhr and Sylt. Numerous seabirds breed and overwinter there. A visit to the Odde thus combines experiencing the landscape with a look at the protected habitat for birds and seals.

A different landscape can be seen at the freshwater lake Wriakhörn, which lies in the dunes between Wittdün and the lighthouse. A boardwalk goes around the lake to Kniepsand. At the Meeram bird decoy, a nature trail passes the decoy pond, through the moorland and along the dunes. The Amrum Nature Centre brings together nature conservation, environmental education and living island culture, and serves as a point of contact for interested visitors.

Paths, mudflats and water sports

On Amrum, cycling routes run through meadows and fields, through the forest and along farm tracks with views of the Wadden Sea. The Dunes themed trail is a circular route: it starts and ends at the bus stop by the lighthouse, but you can also start at another point. If you would rather explore the mudflats with a guide, guided mudflat hikes run between Amrum and Föhr in both directions. These excursions depend on the tides, the weather and the current schedule of guided tours; check the dates before planning.

Kniepsand is ten kilometres long and up to one and a half kilometres wide. It is suitable for surfing, sailing and kitesurfing. Water conditions and local access rules can vary and should be taken into account for the planned activity. The options range from paths through varied landscapes to activities on the water.

In Wittdün, the NaTour-Düne National Park House has an exhibition with aquariums and an outdoor Boßeln course. Check seasonal opening hours before visiting. Together with the Nature Centre and the nature trail at the Meeram bird decoy, it offers different ways to learn about Amrum’s nature and island culture.

Lighthouse, church and island history

The Amrum Lighthouse is the tallest tower on the North Sea coast that visitors can climb. In good visibility, the view extends across Amrum, the neighbouring islands of Sylt and Föhr, the Halligen islands of Langeneß and Hooge, Pellworm and the mainland. Visibility and weather are important considerations when planning a visit: views of these places depend on the conditions.

St. Clemens Church in Nebel was built around 1240 from fieldstone and brick. It has a single nave and a thatched roof; inside are a group of apostles, a baptismal font and an altar with an altarpiece. In addition to church services, it hosts organ concerts and evening celebrations with a guest choir. The historic gravestones in the Old Cemetery beside the church are also known as “Talking Gravestones”. The Amrum Windmill is the oldest windmill in Schleswig-Holstein.

The Öömrang Hüs, known as the “Amrum House”, also offers a glimpse into the past. Its kitchen, living room and parlour have been preserved from the 18th century or recreated in the style of that period. Another example of the island’s history can be found at the archaeological site right next to the bird decoy: there is a faithful reconstruction of an Iron Age house. These places complement nature experiences with different perspectives on architectural history, everyday life and archaeology.

Getting there and choosing accommodation

For the journey, Niebüll has train connections with NEG trains directly to Dagebüll Mole for ferries to Föhr and Amrum. Check timetables and connections before travelling. At the port of Wittdün on Amrum, ticket counters and vending machines are available for tickets for the Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei; also check the current procedures before departure.

Whether you would mainly like to experience paths, mudflats and landscapes during your stay or focus on historic sites can guide your search for accommodation on Amrum. Guided mudflat hikes need to be planned around the tides, weather and schedule; paths such as the Dunes themed trail offer another way to explore the landscape. For orientation on Amrum, you can next visit Norddorf on Amrum and Süddorf.
