Albersdorf combines archaeological discoveries with landscapes and buildings that reveal different layers of history. The Stone Age Park features a reconstructed Stone Age village, steep slopes shape the Gieselau Valley south of the town, and the Church of St. Remigius contains examples of medieval art. You can choose the focus of your stay, from hands-on activities and walking trails to cycling and culture.

A glimpse into the Stone Age

The Dithmarschen Stone Age Park is an archaeological open-air museum with a reconstructed cultural landscape covering around 40 hectares. It contains a full-size Stone Age village with 14 archaeologically inspired buildings. A nature playground complements the site. Practical activities include flint knapping, archery, jewellery making, fire making and bread baking. This lets you explore the subject not only through the reconstructed buildings, but also through traditional crafts.

The Stone Age House displays original finds: an aurochs skull, a 7,000-year-old wooden paddle, early grain finds, stone axes and daggers, as well as cup-marked stones. These objects give the archaeological discoveries a tangible form and complement the view of the reconstructed village.

Walking trails, the Geest and views

Six local trails are marked out for walks in Albersdorf. They include circular routes through the Stone Age Park, to the Lisbeth ehrn Diek pond area, through the Tiefer Grund woodland, around the mill pond, into the town centre and to the Gieselau Valley. The listed routes range from 1.8 to 3.7 kilometres. The pond, woodland, town centre and valley offer different settings for your walk; the distances can help you choose a route that suits your plans for the day.

The Gieselau Valley lies south of Albersdorf, with steep slopes shaped by erosion. Meltwater and precipitation have shaped the landscape. The Kaiserberg also brings landscape and history together: at the foot of this large burial mound is a soil profile pit that explains how the soil and landscape developed. From the 36-metre-high viewing platform, you can look out over Riesewohld, the Geest landscape and the Kiel Canal.

Explore by bike

The Stone Age Park lies directly on the signposted Kiel Canal long-distance hiking trail and can be reached on foot or by bicycle from all directions. A themed cycling route called “Canal and Stone Age Graves” starts at Süderstraße 47 and is 49.60 kilometres long. This makes it a longer option than the local walking trails. As route details may change, check the current route before setting off.

Architecture and archaeological monuments

The Church of St. Remigius is a Romanesque fieldstone church dating from the 12th or 13th century. It houses a late Gothic bronze baptismal font from 1470. The thatched Bürgerhaus was built in 1695 and is, along with the church, one of Albersdorf’s oldest buildings. It houses a cultural centre that serves as a venue for events; the programme may change.

Burial mounds also make their mark on the archaeological landscape. Brutkamp is a burial mound topped by Schleswig-Holstein’s largest capstone. Together with Kaiserberg, it shows how differently such monuments can appear in the landscape: here, the capstone takes centre stage, while there, the soil profile pit and the view add to the visit.

Gardens, events and getting around

Papenbusch Spa Park is in the centre of Albersdorf. Its open-air stage is used for summer events; the programme is seasonal and may change. Brahmkampsgärten is a park divided into 23 themed garden areas. So, alongside archaeological sites, the itinerary can also include gardens and seasonal events.

A stop for bus route 2501 is located at the Stone Age Park car park on SĂĽderstraĂźe 47. As bus routes and stops may change, check the current connection before travelling. When looking for accommodation, your planned daily routine is a useful starting point: consider whether several local walks, a longer bike ride, or the Stone Age and architectural sites will be the focus of your stay. You can then tailor your accommodation search to your own travel plans.
