Discover Weddingstedt: trails, mill and church
Accommodation in Weddingstedt
Discover Weddingstedt along signposted hiking trails at the transition between marshland and geestland. The routes include the restored St. Andrew’s Church and Aurora Mill. Koll's Gasthof and the Waldcafé are places to stop for refreshments. The trails bring together landscapes, local landmarks and opportunities to take a break.
Trails, church and fitness trail
St. Andrew’s Church in Weddingstedt is one of the five so-called original parishes in Dithmarschen. Its historical role gives the hiking trails a clear cultural connection; Aurora Mill is another of the landmarks included. Those who enjoy walking will find both a connection to local history and trails through the landscape between marshland and geestland.
For focused endurance training, there is a fitness trail in the Heider Kreistannen forest in Weddingstedt. It was renovated in 2017 and is intended for endurance training. As conditions and availability may change, check the current situation before your visit.
Dithmarschen: trails at different scales
In the area around Heide in Dithmarschen, the signposted Energy Route is a circular cycling route exploring the region’s development: it traces the transition from peat extraction and oil production to renewable energy landscapes. Check the signage and route conditions before setting out. This thematic cycling loop complements the hiking trails in Weddingstedt; each offers a different focus.
Dithmarschen’s hiking routes also vary in scale. The first stage of the North Sea–Baltic Sea Hiking Trail runs through Dithmarschen and is just under 40 kilometres long; the entire long-distance trail runs in five stages from Meldorf to Kiel. By contrast, “Mötjensee and Sea Eagle” near Lunden is an easy, 12.79-kilometre circular route for walking across lowland terrain. The long-distance hiking stage and the shorter circular route can thus be distinguished by their length and route format.
Dithmarschen: history and prehistory
The Dithmarschen State Museum in Meldorf traces 1,200 years of Dithmarschen’s history—from the wealth of the peasant republic to rural everyday life in the 1960s. In addition, the Dithmarschen museum network brings together 19 professionally and volunteer-run museums in eleven locations. You can focus on history in Meldorf or include the wider museum network in your plans.
At the Stone Age Park Dithmarschen, activities on offer include flint knapping, archery, making Stone Age jewellery, fire-making and bread-baking. Activities may vary depending on the programme, so check the dates for your visit. In addition to the Stone Age Park, the Stone Age Forest in Albersdorf comprises around 40 hectares of natural outdoor grounds that are permanently accessible free of charge. Check access information before visiting. The Stone Age Forest is also home to nine original archaeological monuments.
Dithmarschen: Wadden Sea and events
Guided mudflat walks along the Dithmarschen coast are led by National Park mudflat guides with local knowledge and expertise. At low tide, they reveal the Wadden Sea’s diverse wildlife. Tides and dates vary, so take both into account when planning. In Friedrichskoog, the National Park Station on the south side of the harbour has a National Park exhibition; it is an information centre.
Regional events also offer a variety of highlights. The KOHLosseum cabbage workshop offers demonstrations followed by tastings on Tuesdays to Thursdays at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. From 1 November until Easter, only the 2 p.m. demonstration takes place. As the programme may change, check the times before your visit. During Dithmarschen Cabbage Days, farmers’ markets, town festivals, and sporting and cultural events take place throughout Dithmarschen. Individual events and dates vary.
