Discover Barlt: St. Marien, Frenssen House and Ursula Windmill
Accommodation in Barlt
Barlt brings together architectural history, literature and rural culture. St. Marien, Frenssen House and Ursula Windmill each represent a different story of the town; the Harmonie restaurant adds regional cuisine to the mix. You can use these specific themes to plan your trip and decide whether local history, regional food or an outing in the surrounding area should take centre stage.
Between the Geest and the North Sea
The municipality of Barlt stretches from the Geest to the North Sea. Its landscape includes the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea, a World Heritage Site, and the Speicherkoog. The history of settlement is also linked to dyke construction: the historic town centre developed as a linear settlement on marshy ground in connection with the first dyke, which was intended to hold back the North Sea. The settlement pattern and coastal protection give the town a specific historical context.
Church, literature and historic buildings
The fully preserved roof structure of St. Marien Church dates from 1458 and is considered one of the oldest dated roof structures in Schleswig-Holstein. The protected church complex also includes its furnishings, the bell tower, the churchyard and graves dating from before 1870. The building’s history therefore encompasses more than its architecture: the ensemble surrounding the church is also part of the protected site.
Frenssen House in Barlt is part of the Dithmarschen museum landscape, which brings together 19 museums in eleven locations. Gustav Frenssen was born there, lived there and died there. Preserved furnishings illustrate middle-class domestic culture in the 1920s and 1930s. Visits are possible by prior arrangement; confirm the arrangement before your visit. Barlt also has a connection to literary history as a filming location for the television adaptation of Hans Fallada’s “Farmers, Bosses and Bombs.”
The Harmonie restaurant is a protected brick building dating from 1897, with a two-storey hall and a wooden gallery. The Harmonie country inn serves regional cuisine, including fish, meat, pasta and bowl dishes. The restaurant, hall and catering are also part of the offering. As the menu and services may change, check the latest details before visiting.
Windmill and circular trail
Ursula Windmill is a Dutch-style gallery windmill dating from 1875. Its features include a fantail, two sets of millstones, a motor drive, shuttered sails and a complete wheat mill. The mill is not currently used for milling and can only be viewed from the outside. There is also a rural ice cream café. A visit to the mill therefore centres on its technical features and a clear condition for visitors.
Nearby, the nine-kilometre circular trail “From Donner Kleve to Gudendorfer Forst” runs through the area. It starts and ends at the sports ground in St. Michaelisdonn and follows the boundary between the marsh and the Geest towards Gudendorfer Forst. This gives it a different focus from the town’s historic buildings: the trail follows a transition between landscapes. Check the latest route information before setting out, as details may be updated.
Cabbage and cycle routes in Dithmarschen
Dithmarschen is another part of planning your trip. The region is known for cabbage as a local product and is Europe’s largest continuous cabbage-growing area; around 90 million heads of cabbage are grown there each year. Farm shops in Dithmarschen sell regional produce directly from the producers, including vegetables, meat and dairy products. During Dithmarschen Cabbage Days, the programme across the region includes farmers’ markets, town festivals, and sports and cultural events. Dates and individual offerings may change; check the latest information when planning your trip.
Dithmarschen’s flat marshland provides a setting for longer cycling trips, including the North Sea Cycle Route. These regional opportunities are distinct from Barlt’s townscape and historic buildings: they add further experiences in the wider destination of Dithmarschen.
