Büsum: Mudflats, Harbour and Maritime History
Accommodation in Büsum
Büsum combines nature experiences in the Wadden Sea with harbour and fishing history, as well as activities on the water. The different sides of the town offer a variety of ways to spend your holiday: looking out over the mudflats, exploring historic ships or learning about the work of the shrimp fishery.
Harbour and fishing history
Historic ships lie in Büsum’s museum harbour all year round, including the gaff cutters Margaretha and Fahrewohl and the rescue vessel Rickmer Bock. A walk around the museum harbour introduces visitors to the history of merchant shipping and offers insights into historic fishing artefacts. The fishing harbour is also closely connected to the shrimp fishery: it is home to the town’s fleet of shrimp boats, and visitors can buy fresh shrimp directly from the boats.
The museum am meer is devoted to the history of shrimp fishing and Büsum as a seaside resort since 1837. Exhibits include an original shrimp-sorting machine and a walk-in wheelhouse; a film shows a voyage at sea. Interactive activity stations and a play area round out the museum. Outside, there is also a historic 1920 Spiegelkutter. For planning a visit with children, the activity stations and play area are practical points to consider; the museum harbour offers a different focus, with historic ships and fishing history.
The Wadden Sea and activities on the water
Büsum has been a partner of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park since 2003. The tidal creeks in the Wadden Sea off Büsum can shift by up to 100 metres within a year. On guided mudflat walks, you can explore the Wadden Sea and learn about its natural environment. This allows you not only to look at the landscape, but also to experience it with expert guidance.
Watt'n Insel at the Perlebucht Family Lagoon offers opportunities for swimming, water sports, beach soccer and beach volleyball. Its design includes a sculpted dune landscape with sheltered hollows, as well as natural areas with vegetation resembling salt marshes. Natural spaces and active activities on the water sit side by side here.
Getting around Büsum
Excursion boats depart from the harbour for day trips to Heligoland and fishing trips at sea. When cycling, you can choose from a variety of scenery: routes run along the North Sea, through the surrounding meadows and fields, or through the fishing town. Cultural and natural attractions can be found along the routes. Cycling and boat trips therefore add further ways to experience Büsum to mudflat walks and time spent at Watt'n Insel.
When looking for accommodation in Büsum, the focus you want for your stay can be a helpful starting point: nature watching on the mudflats, activities on the water and by bike, or maritime history each offer a different emphasis. All floors of Watt'n Hus that are open to guests are accessible and wheelchair-friendly.
A broader view of Dithmarschen
In the wider travel destination of Dithmarschen, the Dithmarscher Landesmuseum in Meldorf offers another historical perspective. It takes visitors through 1,200 years of Dithmarschen—from the wealth of the peasant republic to rural everyday life in the 1960s. This regional perspective on the history of farming and rural life complements the maritime and fishing history that shapes Büsum.
