Büsumer Deichhausen: Dog Beach and Speicherkoog
Accommodation in Büsumer Deichhausen
Büsumer Deichhausen brings together a range of nature experiences: a designated dog beach and a longer circular route through the Speicherkoog. This lets you choose between time at the beach and an active cycling tour for your trip.
Dog Beach and Circular Trail Through the Speicherkoog
The officially designated dog beach in the direction of Warwerort allows dogs access to the beach section and the adjacent tidal flats. Dogs must be kept on a lead there because the coast is part of the national park. If you are planning an outing to the beach and tidal flats, bear this requirement in mind when visiting with your dog.
The easy “Natur pur im Speicherkoog” circular cycling route is 33.27 kilometres long. It starts at a car park in Büsumer Deichhausen and runs through the Speicherkoog. Along the way, you can observe a variety of plants, European duck species, wading birds and migratory birds. The circular route combines a specific cycling tour with nature watching, and its length also provides a clear guide for planning your day.
The surrounding landscape includes the Wadden Sea National Park and the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. The national park is also relevant to the dog beach: the lead requirement is part of the applicable visitor regulations there.
Dithmarschen: History and Hands-On Activities
The wider destination of Dithmarschen offers a range of cultural and nature-related themes to complement your trip planning. The Dithmarschen State Museum in Meldorf takes visitors through 1,200 years of Dithmarschen history. Its historical scope ranges from the wealth of the peasant republic to rural everyday life in the 1960s. The Dithmarschen museum network also offers guidance for culture enthusiasts: it brings together 19 museums, run by professional staff and volunteers, across eleven locations. In Weddingstedt, St. Andrew’s Church is one of the five so-called original parish churches in Dithmarschen.
Those interested in practical activities can find options at the Dithmarschen Stone Age Park, including flint knapping, archery, making Stone Age jewellery, fire-making and bread baking. Activities may vary depending on the programme. In addition to the park, the Stone Age Forest in Albersdorf covers around 40 hectares of natural open space and contains nine original archaeological monuments. The site is permanently open and free of charge; check the latest access information before your visit.
The Wadden Sea and Walking in Dithmarschen
In Friedrichskoog, the National Park Station is an information centre with a national park exhibition on the south side of the harbour. Other attractions in Friedrichskoog include a seal breeding station and the Wadden Sea Conservation Station. From Friedrichskoog, the Conservation Station looks after the national park in the southern part of Dithmarschen, between Meldorfer Koog and the mouth of the Elbe, along 30 kilometres of coastline.
Guided mudflat walks along the Dithmarschen coast are led by local guides with expert knowledge of the national park’s tidal flats. At low tide, the diverse life of the Wadden Sea becomes visible. Tides and available dates vary; check when a guided walk is taking place before making plans.
Dithmarschen also offers walking routes of varying lengths. Near Lunden, the “Mötjensee und Seeadler” route is an easy 12.79-kilometre circular walk across flat terrain. Much longer is the first stage of the North–Baltic Sea Hiking Trail: it runs through Dithmarschen and is just under 40 kilometres long. The entire long-distance trail consists of five stages from Meldorf to Kiel. These distances give you a concrete basis for comparing a single circular walk with a stage of a longer-distance trail.
Cabbage and Regional Events
The KOHLosseum’s Krautwerkstatt features demonstrations followed by tastings. They take place Tuesday to Thursday at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. From 1 November until Easter, only the 2 p.m. demonstration is available; check the current schedule before visiting. During the Dithmarschen Cabbage Days, farmers’ markets, town festivals, and sports and cultural events are also held throughout Dithmarschen. You can take the individual dates and programme items into account separately when planning your trip.
