Elpersbüttel is located directly on the North Sea. The municipality includes Speicherkoog-Nord, the island of Helmsand and extensive areas of Wadden Sea. The coast and natural surroundings offer different ways to spend your stay: time at the bathing beach, a longer cycling tour or a closer look at the Wadden Sea landscape. When choosing accommodation, consider whether you would like to focus on the beach, outdoor activities in Speicherkoog or the distinctive natural surroundings of Helmsand.

Bathing beach, Wadden Sea and cycling routes

Elpersbüttel’s bathing beach has a 600-metre-long grassy area for sunbathing and is a starting point for guided walks on the Wadden Sea. Swimming depends on the tides; check local conditions before swimming. The bathing beach also has a designated naturist beach and a small playground. A paved road leads onto the sea dike and provides wheelchair users with access to the beach-chair area.

There are also different options for cycling tours. Paved paths on both sides of the coastal protection dike make cycling in Elpersbüttel easier. A moderate, 72.78-kilometre circular route through Speicherkoog passes the Elpersbüttel bathing beach and includes a guided walk on the Wadden Sea. Along the way, the wind, birdsong and things found on the beach can shape the experience. Elpersbüttel’s recreational facilities also include a bridle path.

Heathland, Hallig and national park station

Jägersburger Heide is a local nature conservation project in Elpersbüttel. Heathland habitats are protected under European and German nature conservation laws. Another distinctive landscape is Hallig Helmsand, near Elpersbüttel: it is Dithmarschen’s only Hallig and is surrounded by salt marshes. The causeway connecting Helmsand to the dike offers insights into sedimentation processes in the Wadden Sea.

Access to Hallig Helmsand is restricted at certain times for nature conservation reasons, especially during the breeding season. Follow current signs and local nature conservation guidance. Wadden Sea guides offer guided tours in the area around Helmsand; this does not mean that the Hallig itself is accessible.

The National Park Station Wattwurm is located in Speicherkoog, between Elpersbüttel bathing beach and the New Meldorf Harbour. It is an exhibition and information centre, as well as a starting point for guided tours. A nature trail runs alongside the station, where orchids can be seen in early summer.

More ways to explore Dithmarschen

The wider destination of Dithmarschen also offers a range of themes to consider when planning a trip. The Dithmarschen State Museum in Meldorf takes visitors through 1,200 years of Dithmarschen—from the wealth of the farmers’ republic to everyday rural life in the 1960s. Dithmarschen Stone Age Park offers hands-on activities such as flint knapping, archery, making Stone Age jewellery, lighting fires and baking bread; activities may vary depending on the programme.

Those interested in the Wadden Sea can also join guided walks on the Wadden Sea along the Dithmarschen coast. National Park Wadden Sea guides with local knowledge and expertise lead the tours and reveal the diverse life of the Wadden Sea at low tide. Tides and guided tour dates vary. This allows you to weigh up the coast, nature and culture as different focuses for your stay, while keeping in mind the special conditions around the Wadden Sea and Helmsand.
