Discover Heide: Market, History and Landscape
Accommodation in Heide
In Heide, city history and culture meet the landscape of Dithmarschen, shaped by the coast, marshland and geest. The town is close to the coast and Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. Its historic centre is home to Germany’s largest market square. The town also has museums, a distinctive water tower and a theatre programme covering a range of genres. When choosing accommodation, you can consider whether your trip will focus mainly on Heide’s urban attractions or the landscapes of Dithmarschen.
Market Square, Market and City History
Heide’s historic Saturday market has a tradition spanning more than 500 years. Its regionally focused selection includes fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, cheese and eggs, flowers and plants, baked goods, and household items; the range may vary. This means the selection spans everything from food to everyday essentials. The market square is also a distinctive part of the town’s history: Lüttenheid Museum Island explores, among other things, its significance, the history of the Dithmarschen Peasant Republic, the conquest and destruction of the town by fire, and the history of local associations and pharmacies.
Among the Museum Island’s special exhibits are a reconstructed 16th-century tiled stove and archaeological finds from the 1559 fire. The combination of city history and tangible finds offers different points of connection to the historical overview. Those interested in Klaus Groth will also find the Klaus Groth House on Museum Island—his birthplace—with an exhibition about his life and work. The former stable houses fully equipped historic workshops for wheelwrighting, carpentry, shoemaking, tailoring and goldsmithing.
Buildings, Art and Culture
Heide’s water tower was built as a water distribution station. It is 45.71 metres tall and is considered a landmark of the town. In St. Jürgen’s Church, the altar paintings and the altar reflect different artistic influences: the paintings are by Heide artist Johann Holte, while the 1699 altar is a work by Valentin Preuß of Hamburg. The present-day church was rebuilt using surviving walls.
Heide’s municipal theatre also adds to the cultural experience. It hosts events in comedy, theatre and classical music. The programme changes over time; if you want to plan for a particular date, it is best to check the current events schedule.
Explore Heide on Foot and Digitally
A digital town tour is one way to explore Heide at your own pace: it is about three kilometres long and takes approximately one to one and a half hours. This approximate duration helps you fit the tour into your day’s plans. It is available in German, English and Danish; QR codes provide additional information. Technical details and availability may change, so it is worth checking the latest information about the digital tour in advance.
A virtual tour of Klaus Groth’s birthplace takes you through historic rooms and provides information about his life and work; the tour’s availability on the platform may change. This means there are two ways to learn about the poet: the virtual tour and the exhibition at the Klaus Groth House. The formats offer different perspectives: the digital town tour focuses on Heide, while the virtual tour centres on a particular house and Klaus Groth’s life and work.
