Discover Süderdeich through its distinctive experiences and the Hebbel Circular Trail. At Warfthof Wollatz, children can enjoy supervised pony experiences, including caring for the ponies and leading them. The farm also offers alpaca walks and individually arranged carriage rides through the surrounding countryside, including routes towards the outer dike. These experiences with animals offer different ways to explore the landscape.

On the Hebbel Circular Trail

The Hebbel Circular Trail connects Wesselburen with Norddeich and Süderdeich. It is divided into three sections, each 8 to 12 kilometres long, and can be shortened. The section lengths give you a guide when choosing your route; a shorter route is also possible. The trail can be used for hiking, jogging, Nordic walking and cycling.

On the way to Süderdeich, the circular trail passes through meadows and fields. A feather marks the route. At viewpoints, you’ll find literary information boards and places to sit. In Wesselburen, the trail passes the Hebbelhaus and the Hebbel Museum. This combines exercise with literary stops and varied views of the landscape along the way.

Cabbage, agriculture and regional history

In Wesselburen, the KOHLosseum brings together a historic sauerkraut workshop, a farmers’ market and a cabbage museum. The exhibition covers rural life, cultivation methods and old machinery; the museum also explores cabbage cultivation, the soils of Dithmarschen, drainage, dikes and nature. The KOHLosseum also showcases Wesselburen’s regional tradition of cabbage cultivation. The farmers’ market offers regional products, including North Sea Coast kimchi and sauerkraut.

Demonstrations at the Krautwerkstatt are followed by tastings. Demonstrations with a tasting afterwards take place Tuesdays to Thursdays at 2, 3 and 4 pm; from 1 November until Easter, only the 2 pm session is available. Check the times before your visit.

The landscape around Wesselburen also offers an insight into regional agriculture: around 10,000 hectares of intensively farmed marshland define the area. The fields grow grain, rapeseed, cabbage, potatoes and sugar beet. Together with the exhibition themes, this provides a vivid connection between cultivation, landscape and regional food.

More to explore in the Dithmarschen holiday region

The wider Dithmarschen holiday region offers further opportunities to explore history and take part in practical activities. The Dithmarscher Landesmuseum in Meldorf traces 1,200 years of Dithmarschen, from the wealth of the peasant republic to rural everyday life in the 1960s. At the Stone Age Park Dithmarschen, hands-on activities include flint knapping, archery, making Stone Age jewellery, making fire and baking bread. Regional history and participatory activities appeal to different interests. The activities on offer may vary by programme; check the dates in advance.
