Alkersum: Art, Marshland and Island Cheese
Accommodation in Alkersum
Alkersum brings together impressive art, open landscapes and regional products. The village lies between Föhr’s geest and marsh landscapes; selected cycling routes also pass through Alkersum. If you are looking for accommodation, consider whether your trip will focus more on museums and culture, nature and outdoor activities, or local products.
Marshland, wildlife and cycling routes
Green marsh pastures stretch across the Alkersum geest. Rabbits, waterfowl, hares and roe deer find a habitat in the marshes; hedges and rows of trees offer them shelter. The Alkersumer Marschweg is a place to pause: its rest areas invite you to listen to the sounds of nature or watch the sunset.
Cycling routes also offer a chance to make the landscape part of your stay. Föhr has more than 200 kilometres of cycling paths and five themed routes; selected routes pass through Alkersum. As a route network can change gradually, it is a good idea to check the route before setting off. This lets you plan your cycling trip around your preferred distance and interest in the island’s themes, without committing to a particular route.
Art in the museum and garden
The Museum Kunst der Westküste is based in Alkersum. Changing exhibitions showcase Scandinavian and German artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. On Föhr, the museum explores the themes of the sea and coast, as well as important German and Scandinavian artists from 1830 to 1930. It was founded in 2009 by Frederik Paulsen, whose family comes from Alkersum on Föhr.
The museum includes a garden with historic trees and old Föhr rose varieties. It offers another way to explore alongside the exhibitions: in addition to the artworks, visitors can take in the garden’s mature and cultivated features. The main exhibition area is accessible and has an accessible toilet, a lift and ramps. If you rely on particular accessibility features, it is best to confirm them with the museum before your visit.
Horse riding and local activities
For guests interested in horse riding, Alkersum offers marked riding trails, riding stables, indoor riding arenas and horse boarding facilities. The Hualewjonken in Alkersum organises group rides for guests, card evenings and get-togethers with other Hualewjonken clubs on Föhr. If you would like to take part in one of these events, check what is available locally. On Föhr, the Föhr Riding and Driving Club also offers training courses, club competitions and smaller events.
For families, this is an opportunity to make your choices based on the interests of your travel group, rather than assuming that a particular type of accommodation has specific facilities.
Cheese and farm shop throughout the year
The Föhrer Inselkäse farm in Alkersum processes milk into seven varieties of cow’s milk cheese throughout the year. Alongside its cheeses, the farm shop sells homemade jam and egg liqueur, as well as Föhr eggs, sausage, regional wines, pasta, mustard and oils. A small café adds to the offering in summer, serving coffee, treats and freshly topped cheese sandwiches. Its seasonal operation makes summer the right time to visit if you would like to plan a stop there.
Getting to Föhr and your stay
Föhr can only be reached by ship or by air. From the mainland, you can travel by train or car to Dagebüll Mole; ferries operated by Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei run from there to Wyk on Föhr. The W.D.R. catamaran, chartered to its partner Adler-Schiffe, provides a fast passenger connection between Föhr, Amrum and Dagebüll. Timetables and fares can change, so it is worth checking the latest information before your trip.
With art, marshland, riding opportunities and farm products, Alkersum has something to suit a range of interests.
