Discover Föhr: mudflats, cycling paths and Frisian culture
Accommodation in Föhr
Föhr combines the landscape of the Wadden Sea with cycling paths, Frisian culture and experiences centered on water and nature. The tides give a stay on the island its own rhythm: you can enjoy this natural experience at any time of year. When choosing accommodation, it is worth first considering the experiences you want to shape your trip—such as mudflats, cycling, museums or water sports.
The Wadden Sea and nature experiences
Föhr lies at the heart of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park landscape. Guided mudflat hikes offer the chance to spot lugworms, mussels, starfish and wading birds. One special tour covers about eight kilometres from Dunsum to the northern tip of the neighbouring island of Amrum. Tides and weather are important factors when planning this hike.
The Föhr National Park House also brings together nature and island history: its exhibitions cover habitats in the tidal zone, birds and the formation of the island; visitors can also see a harbour porpoise skeleton and shells. Many events organised by the Wadden Sea Conservation Station start at the house. These include nature-focused mudflat walks, detective rallies and evening beach walks.
Anyone interested in birdlife will find another point of interest at the Boldixum bird decoy: it is the only one of the five remaining bird decoys on Föhr that is open to visitors. If you are planning to attend an event or visit, it is worth checking the latest information before your trip.
Cycling paths and themed routes
More than 200 kilometres of signposted cycling paths and five themed routes offer different ways to explore Föhr by bike. A 21-kilometre cycling tour links cultural highlights with an internationally renowned art museum. The approximately eleven-kilometre Planet Trail, meanwhile, runs from Wyk to Utersum and offers insights into astronomy and natural sciences. The routes have different focuses: one features cultural stops, while another centres on learning about the natural sciences.
The starting points and cultural sites mentioned are also useful for finding your way around individual places. The Planet Trail begins in Wyk, while the mudflat hike to Amrum starts in Dunsum. Lembecksburg is near Borgsum. You can take these locations into account when deciding which experiences to make the focus of your trip.
Museums, Frisian culture and history
The Museum Kunst der Westküste is dedicated to the sea and the coast and displays works by important German and Scandinavian artists from 1830 to 1930. In the centre of Wyk, the Dr. Carl Häberlin Frisian Museum offers an insight into Frisian history and culture. St. John’s Church is another of the island’s prominent cultural landmarks: dating from the 12th century, it is also known as the Frisian Cathedral and is the largest church on Föhr.
Near Borgsum, Lembecksburg preserves visible remains of a Viking-era ring fort. The site includes a moat and a circular rampart that is up to ten metres high and nearly one hundred metres in diameter. These dimensions give a vivid sense of the site, without reducing its history to a museum visit. Fering, the Föhr variety of Frisian, is also part of living Frisian culture: around 3,000 islanders still speak the language today.
Föhr has four ring-riding clubs, each of which holds a royal ring-riding competition. Dates vary from year to year, so check them for your specific trip. These traditions and events add another perspective on island culture alongside its museums and history.
Wave pool, water sports and local produce
The swimming pools at the AQUAFÖHR wave pool are filled with heated, original North Sea water. In the large pool, the wave machine creates North Sea waves every half hour; check the current opening times before your visit. Föhr’s water sports schools offer courses for beginners and advanced participants in windsurfing, kiteboarding, stand-up paddleboarding and sailing. This means there are activities on the water to choose from as well as nature and cultural experiences.
In Oldsum, Inselfein makes jams and fruit spreads, mustard, fine mustard sauces and spicy fruit sauces using fresh ingredients and entirely by hand. This glimpse into local production adds a culinary theme to excursions and visits; the product range may change.
Planning your journey and accommodation
Föhr can only be reached by ship or by air. The W.D.R. catamaran, chartered to its partner Adler-Schiffe, provides a fast passenger connection between Föhr, Amrum and Dagebüll. Check the timetable before you travel. When choosing accommodation, you can take into account not only the nature and cultural experiences you are interested in, but also your journey and the island locations that matter to you.
