Wyk auf Föhr combines coastal views with distinctive stories from the island’s history and seafaring past. The promenade, South Beach, museums and activities related to the Wadden Sea reveal different sides of the town. If you’d like to bring together the different interests of your travel group, you’ll find beach and sports activities as well as cultural history and nature experiences here.

Beach, promenade and activities

The three-kilometre-long promenade is fully accessible and offers views of the Halligen and the Wadden Sea. Wheelchair-accessible routes to the promenade are available at beach sections 5–6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17–18, 23–24 and 26. On the island of Föhr, AQUAFÖHR provides wheelchair users with access to a beach promenade via a 40-metre ramp with a seven percent gradient.

At Wyk’s South Beach, there are two water sports schools, as well as facilities for beach volleyball and beach soccer. This makes it easy to include time by the coast and physical activity in your daily plans, while the promenade also offers views across the Wadden Sea and towards the Halligen.

Frisian history in Wyk

The Dr. Carl Häberlin Frisian Museum in the centre of Wyk offers insights into Frisian history and culture. Its cultural history collection spans ten rooms and around 600 square metres; a dedicated section focuses on whaling and seafaring. The museum opened in 1908. The oldest house on Föhr stands on its grounds: built in 1617, it was moved here from Alkersum in 1927. The open-air complex also includes a post mill from Hallig Langeneß.

Wyk’s bell tower also tells stories of the town’s past. The first tower was built in 1701; historically, it signalled church services, fires and storm surges. Wyk was founded as a seaside resort and is considered the oldest seaside resort on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein. Here, you’ll encounter both maritime history and evidence of Frisian culture.

Experience the Wadden Sea

The National Park House in Wyk is an information and visitor centre for the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site and Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. Guided nature walks across the mudflats, detective trails and evening beach walks start from here. Activities and dates may vary by season, so check the current programme before your visit. During guided mudflat walks on Föhr, you can observe lugworms, mussels, starfish and wading birds.

Wyk as a base for exploring Föhr

If you’d like to discover other parts of the island besides Wyk, Föhr has more than 200 kilometres of designated cycling paths and five signposted themed routes. This offers a different way to plan your day than focusing on the beach, promenade and museum in town: you can make cycling or Wyk’s coastal and cultural activities your focus without having to choose between them.

For your journey, it’s important to know that Föhr can only be reached by ship or by air. The W.D.R. catamaran, chartered to Adler-Schiffe, provides a fast passenger service between Föhr, Amrum and Dagebüll. Check the timetable before you travel. You can also include Boldixum in your island itinerary: of the five remaining duck decoys on Föhr, only the Boldixum duck decoy is open to visitors.

Choose accommodation to suit your interests

Wyk is an especially good place to stay if you want your visit to revolve around the beach, promenade, cultural history and activities related to the Wadden Sea. If you’d also like to explore cycling paths and other places on Föhr, you can include these island experiences in your plans. When looking for accommodation, it helps to first decide whether you want your days to focus mainly on Wyk’s coastal and cultural activities or on a broader island itinerary.
