Emmelsbüll-Horsbüll lies between the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site to the west, and the Geest ridge in Schleswig-Holstein to the east. This location draws attention to both the coast and mudflats, and the eastern Geest area. At the Südwesthörn bathing area, there is a grassy area, beach chairs, a public shower and a jetty leading into the North Frisian Wadden Sea. This gives visitors concrete ways to enjoy a coastal stay.

Wadden Sea, salt marshes and nature

The natural landscape also includes the coastal salt marshes associated with Emmelsbüll-Horsbüll. They are considered a habitat for numerous locally occurring animals and plants. Guided mudflat and salt marsh tours explain the local flora and fauna. When walking on the mudflats, do not go out alone. This means your plans can include both the bathing area and guided nature tours as different ways to experience the Wadden Sea.

Churches with their own historical character

The Rimberti Church in Emmelsbüll has stood on the village hill since 1768 and is considered the largest church in the Wiedingharde region. The St. Mary’s Church in Horsbüll is considered the oldest church in the Wiedingharde region and dates back to the early 13th century. Its original pews have been preserved.

The historic seating arrangement in St. Mary’s Church is also noteworthy: women sat on the north side, men on the south side, and dignitaries beneath the gallery. The two churches thus have different historical features: the Rimberti Church is notable for its village hill, age and size, while St. Mary’s Church brings together an early construction date, original pews and the traditional seating arrangement.

Südwesthörn: information and overnight stays

At the Südwesthörn pumping station, an information board tells visitors about the structure. Campervans can park behind the pumping station for up to three nights; electricity hook-ups are available. Check availability and applicable conditions before you arrive.

Südwesthörn is also associated with a historic inn and a small fish stand. As individual businesses may change, check before visiting whether each one is currently operating.

North Frisia as a wider travel destination

Across the wider North Frisia travel region, the coastline stretches for 441 kilometres. The five North Frisian islands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum, among others. North Frisia also encompasses ten Halligen, distinctive landforms within the national park. These examples give the coastal landscape a broader regional perspective.

Cyclists in North Frisia can also choose routes of different lengths. The Beltringharder Route is 27 kilometres long and starts in Lüttmoorsiel. The Stollberg-Koog Tour starts in Reußenköge at the Amsinck House and is 35 kilometres long. It is therefore eight kilometres longer than the Beltringharder Route, and the starting points are also different.

Experiences to guide your accommodation search

When searching for accommodation, you can first decide what kind of stay you want. Südwesthörn and the guided mudflat and salt marsh tours offer a coastal and nature-focused experience; the churches feature historic architecture and details of their furnishings. The cycling routes are part of the wider North Frisia region and provide another regional context for your plans.
