With its 43-metre-high tower at St. Christian, Garding has a special connection to the Eiderstedt landscape: the tower is the highest point on the peninsula and once served as a sea mark because it could be seen far out in the North Sea. History, culture and green spaces are also close together in the town itself. This makes Garding an interesting base if you want to combine historical discoveries with time outdoors and excursions around Eiderstedt.

St. Christian and Garding’s History

St. Christian was built in 1109. Its two-aisled hall with a vaulted interior is considered unique on Eiderstedt. The church houses the oldest organ in northern Germany, built in 1512. The winged altarpiece from 1596 is regarded as an important work of Mannerism in Schleswig-Holstein. The construction period, organ and altarpiece mark different stages in the church’s history, brought together in one place.

Another historical landmark is the Old Deaconry, Garding’s oldest house. Theodor Mommsen was born there. If you are interested in the town’s past, you can also book historical guided tours: they explain Garding’s history and show corners visitors might not find on their own. The two-hour tours can be booked on request for individuals and groups; arrange a date in advance.

The blue town-history signs at historical sights also offer insights into the past. Their locations are marked on a map, available from the Tourist Information Office. This makes it easy to follow a route between the marked stops if you would rather discover the town’s history on your own.

Culture, the Market and Discovering the Town Together

The Kulturhaus brings together a range of cultural activities, including art exhibitions, literary circles, readings, a writing workshop and a children’s art studio. Individual activities may change. Since 1998, the Garding Musikantenbörse has also been held as a recurring concert for musicians and music enthusiasts; dates and programme may vary.

There are specific options for families: the town park has play equipment, and the Kulturhaus offers a children’s art studio. The traditional Tuesday market sells fresh vegetables, fruit, eggs, baked goods, meat, fish and plants. The goods offered by individual stalls may vary. The market offers a different glimpse of the town from its historical sights and cultural activities.

Green Spaces and Getting Your Bearings in Town

The town park is centrally located and has a tree trail, a boules court, play equipment and benches. The town forest offers something different: there is a circular trail with bridges, as well as a meadow for picnics or barbecues. You can choose between a walk in the town forest and a visit to the centrally located town park, depending on whether you prefer a woodland route or the park’s range of facilities.

There are also places to help you plan a cycling trip. A cycle route network has been laid out in the town centre. The Tourist Information Office provides route tips and cycling maps; a bicycle service station with a pump and tools is located outside the building. Through the Gaarner Dörpsmobil, Garding offers car sharing and electric car sharing. Check availability and the applicable membership conditions before using the service.

Garding as a Base for Exploring Eiderstedt

Garding is centrally located on the Eiderstedt peninsula and serves as a starting point for excursions to the beaches of St. Peter-Ording, Tönning’s historic harbour and the Multimar Wattforum, Friedrichstadt, and the Westerhever lighthouse. These destinations offer a range of options: coast, harbour, tidal-flat centre, town and lighthouse each provide a different reason to visit.
