Horstedt lies at the transition between marsh and geest. The small-scale hedgerow landscape, which continues to shape the village and surrounding scenery, emerged when historic land consolidation transformed the former heathland. Agriculture also shapes the village centre and the surrounding landscape. The Horstedter Bek is one of the tributaries of the Arlau.

Inland dunes along the road towards Husum were afforested under the Nord Programme. This brings together different chapters of land use in the landscape: the former heathland, the creation of the hedgerows and the afforestation along the road to Husum.

Exploring on foot and by bike

The approximately 20-kilometre Husum–Horstedt–Husum hiking route is part of the Husum Bay network of walking trails. In summer, a Horstedt cycling group takes rides of 20 to 30 kilometres through the surrounding countryside. These distances give you an idea of two different ways to enjoy some active time on holiday: a hiking route and summer group rides. Check the dates and participation requirements for the cycling tours locally before planning.

The former rendering plant site may be suitable as a starting point or place to take a break. Check the conditions on site before visiting.

The Ox Road, theatre and architectural heritage

The Ox Road passed through Horstedt when cattle were driven from Jutland to Hamburg. The origins of Horstedt’s inns also date back to the time of these cattle drives. The route and the history of the inns therefore tell of the same historic connection between Jutland and Hamburg.

Since 1982, the Horstedt theatre group has staged a Low German play every year, either as a one-act or three-act piece. If you would like to attend a performance, check the dates locally before your stay. Nearby is the Olderup fieldstone church, which has largely retained its original form. It adds an example of historic architecture to the local story.

Accommodation and the wider region

Horstedt has a number of holiday apartments and rooms for rent; the village is also associated with rural and farm holidays. Availability may change, so check before booking. Horstedt is close to the neighbouring town of Husum, and the North Sea is also within easy reach.

The wider North Frisia destination also offers a coastal and Wadden Sea perspective: North Frisia has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum. North Frisia also encompasses ten Halligen, distinctive landscape formations within the national park. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an officially designated nature reserve and part of the national park. In Horstedt itself, the transition between marsh and geest remains the defining feature of the village.
