Discover Langenhorn through its sights and protected architectural heritage, as well as its heathland, forests and moorlands. The North Sea and the Wadden Sea broaden the view to the wider North Frisia region.

Architectural Heritage and Sights in Langenhorn

Langenhorn’s sights include the Friedrich Paulsen Memorial, St. Lawrence Church and the Langenhorn Forge. The historic market square is also part of the protected cultural heritage. It is lined mainly with single-storey brick buildings with thatched or tiled roofs. The memorial, church and forge each represent a distinct cultural landmark; at the market square, the architectural styles take centre stage. Visitors interested in architecture will find specific features here, such as the low-rise buildings and the different roofing materials.

Heathland, Forest, Moorland and the North Sea Coast

Langenhorn’s landscape is characterised by heathland, forest and moorland. Nearby tidal flats and waterscapes along the North Sea, as well as extensive forest and heathland, add to the scenery. The North Sea coast is approximately 10 km from Langenhorn; the actual distance depends on the specific destination and route. Hamburger Hallig and Holmer Siel are considered nearby bathing destinations. This makes it possible to compare contrasting landscapes: heathland and forest on one side, tidal flats and coastal waters on the other.

North Frisia as a Wider Travel Destination

The wider coastal landscape comes into view in the broader travel destination of North Frisia, which has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum. North Frisia also comprises ten Halligen, a distinctive type of landscape within the national park. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an officially designated nature reserve and forms part of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park.

Excursions and Nature Experiences in the Region

Excursion boats depart from Schlüttsiel for the Halligen of Oland, Langeneß, Gröde and Hooge, as well as for the seal banks. The Schlüttsiel Information Centre features a natural history exhibition and offers guided tours about the Wadden Sea and nature conservation almost every day. Weather permitting, a guided walk along the sea dike follows. Check the excursion boat timetable before setting out and the latest tour dates before visiting.

Visitors can observe a rich variety of birdlife at Hauke-Haien-Koog. Hallig Südfall also offers a distinctive landscape: it covers 50 ha, lies in Zone 1 of the national park’s protected area and has a largely natural landscape. Südfall can only be visited as part of a guided tour, either on foot or with the mudflat carriage operators.
