Joldelund combines an old village center with trails through the Geest and North Frisian architectural and cultural history. At its heart is the roughly 800-year-old fieldstone church of St. Dionysius, first documented in 1240. The village’s historic details and the trails in the surrounding area offer different focal points for planning your trip.

Church and mill: history in the village landscape

St. Dionysius is characterized by North Frisian simplicity. Drawings can be found on the ceiling beams in the chancel. The altarpiece was probably remodeled and repainted in 1601. The church thus brings together early history and later changes to its furnishings.

Another historic landmark is the 1771 Dutch-style smock mill. It was built using components from Holland and is privately owned. If you are planning a visit, please make arrangements separately.

Trails, Geest and nature

Joldelund offers cycling on an extensive network of trails lined with hedgerows, walks in the attractive surrounding area, and horseback riding. One example of a longer circular route is the Kammbarg Route: this easy 25.613-kilometer loop starts in Lütjenholm, passes through varied Geest countryside and reaches Joldelund. The 1771 Dutch-style smock mill is also one of its landmarks. Check the latest route details before setting out.

In nearby Joldelunder Schweiz, a nature trail runs past the 30-meter-high Kammbarg. The Ostenautal Route offers a different perspective on the landscape: it passes the Löwenstedter Sandberge and Schirlbusch nature reserves, known for their characteristic flora and fauna. The routes offer different impressions of nature and landscape, and their destinations are not interchangeable.

Culture is also part of the region’s discoveries. A short detour on a regional route leads to the nearby Drelsdorf Costume Museum. Its extensive collection of folklore objects has been assembled since the 1950s. Husum and Flensburg are also good options for day trips; Denmark and the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park are also considered easily accessible.

Accommodation and trip planning

Accommodation options may change over time, so check availability for your travel dates. When choosing a base, it helps to prioritize what you want to do: will the village’s history be the main focus, or cycling, walks and horseback riding?

North Frisia as a broader travel horizon

The wider destination of North Frisia adds its own coastal and island perspective. North Frisia has 441 kilometers of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum. North Frisia also encompasses ten Halligen, distinctive landscape formations within the national park. These regional features complement the village landscape of Joldelund with a broader setting.
