Tönning is a harbor town on the Eider Estuary, where it meets the North Sea. At the historic harbor, maritime views meet a long urban history; in the Katinger Watt, meadows, forests and paths take center stage. There is also a beach on the Eider dyke, trips on the water and regional specialties. When planning your trip, you can choose between different themes rather than structuring every day the same way.

Harbor Views and Urban History

Along the harbor promenade, houses and restaurants offer places to eat with a view of the historic harbor. The waterfront provides a variety of photo opportunities: the Skipperhuset, the white Waterways and Shipping Office, a small wooden shipyard and the Packhaus.

The Packhaus, built in 1783, houses Tönning’s urban history exhibition, with exhibits from the town’s past. The building is also used for events throughout the year and houses a small museum dedicated to Tönning’s history.

Another distinctive landmark is the medieval St. Lawrence’s Church. Its construction as a hall church began around 1180. The 62-meter-high tower is one of the tallest in Schleswig-Holstein; inside the church is also a black marble baptismal font that is more than 450 years old. The building’s history, the tower and the baptismal font each make their own impression, from its medieval origins to a distinctive interior feature.

Paths through the Katinger Watt and Experiences on the Water

The Katinger Watt is a bird sanctuary at the mouth of the Eider, with a landscape characterized by meadows and forests. Paths invite you to hike and enjoy nature. At the NABU Centre, you can borrow binoculars or a spotting scope and follow five prepared hiking routes through the Katinger Watt. This lets you explore on foot, while the optical aids offer a closer view of nature.

A trip on the MS Adler II offers another way to discover the Wadden Sea. The excursion includes a catch, allowing visitors to see animals from the Wadden Sea. Expert commentary covers both the area and the catch. This excursion is quite different from the hikes: the boat trip and the explanations on board take center stage.

There is a bathing beach on the Eider dyke, with sandy and grassy areas. A heated seawater outdoor pool is right next to it. The beach and the pool offer two different ways to spend time by the water, so your preferences can help determine how you spend your time there.

Seasonal and Regional Cuisine

Cafés and restaurants along the harbor promenade and the Eider serve seasonal and regional specialties. KFT – Krabben und Fisch Tönning supplies local restaurants with freshly caught fish and crabs. Both views of the historic harbor and regional produce are part of the town’s culinary character.

Explore the Wider Eiderstedt Area

Eiderstedt can also help guide your trip planning: six themed cycling routes connect notable sights with characteristic landscape features. The Wasserwege-Tour follows the Eider from Tönning to Friedrichstadt. Both offer a perspective beyond the individual town, but with different emphases: the themed routes connect sights and landscape, while the Wasserwege-Tour follows the course of the Eider.

When looking for accommodation in Tönning, it may help to first sort out what you would like to do each day: Would you prefer to focus on the harbor and urban history, paths in the Katinger Watt or experiences on the water? This choice can help give your trip a direction without requiring every day to follow the same theme.
