Ahrensbök brings together forest paths, pilgrimage history and a culture of remembrance. Many of the municipality’s forests are used for walks and enjoying nature; at the same time, the Via Jutlandica East Route passes through the town. Those wishing to combine nature with local history will find a range of options to help plan their trip.

Forests, Pilgrimage Route and Circular Trails

The wider Ostholstein travel region features a landscape that ranges from eastern hill country and moors to deciduous forests and Baltic Sea beaches. Ahrensbök itself offers opportunities for hiking and enjoying nature in its many forests. Nearby, a trekking site offers expansive views over the valley. With a little luck, you may spot birds, lizards, insects, red kites and white-tailed eagles there.

The Via Jutlandica East Route is a 155-kilometre pilgrimage route that passes through Ahrensbök between Plön and Lübeck. It is marked throughout with a stylised scallop shell and yellow arrows. Two circular routes offer different geographical highlights: one passes through Dunkelsdorf, Ahrensbök, Gnissau and Cashagen. Another runs from Scharbeutz via Raketau to Bad Schwartau and includes Ahrensbök and nearby villages in the southern part of the municipality.

The former palace park is also one of the highlights along the routes through Ahrensbök. A hiking educational trail and the Ahrensbök forester’s lodge add to the nature theme; the Ostholstein district recommends the Bee Nature Trail as an educational nature trail.

Church History and a Culture of Remembrance

A pilgrimage chapel stood on the site of St. Mary’s Church before 1300; the church itself was first built in 1328. Historical traces from several centuries shape the building and its interior, which has changed over time. St. Mary’s Church is open during the day. Pilgrim stamps are available from the church office and the rectory; check opening hours and stamp availability before your visit.

The Ahrensbök Memorial Site presents a permanent exhibition on five topics relating to National Socialism and persecution in the region. As an educational venue outside the school setting, it places particular emphasis on bringing history to younger visitors. Guided tours for school, youth and other groups are available by prior booking.

Ahrensbök Palace was built between 1593 and 1601 and demolished in 1765. The former palace park lies along routes through Ahrensbök.

Routes and Practical Information

When planning your routes, the main differences between those described are their format and the places they pass through: the Via Jutlandica is a pilgrimage route with continuous waymarking, while circular trails pass through several towns and villages. If you prefer to focus on nature, Ahrensbök also has a hiking educational trail and the Bee Nature Trail.

According to the 2024 municipal development plan, eight bus routes serve the municipality, all stopping in central Ahrensbök. Services are concentrated mainly around school hours, with only a few journeys during school holidays and at weekends. Check the current timetable before travelling, as schedules and service patterns can change.

Ostholstein as the Wider Region

The wider Ostholstein travel region offers other distinctive cultural and nature experiences. Every summer, the Eutin Festival stages various operas and operettas as open-air performances. The Ostholstein Museum in Eutin hosts changing exhibitions and a permanent exhibition about Eutin during its heyday around 1800. During the winter months, concerts are held in the vaulted hall at Cismar Monastery in the municipality of Grömitz. The Natureum Steinwarder nature experience park in Heiligenhafen gives children and adults the chance to experience nature with all their senses.
