Bosau: Cultural History and Landscape
Accommodation in Bosau
Bosau brings together subjects ranging from church history and rural architecture to historic routes, a long-established cultural landscape and the natural beach. You can get to know the town through its buildings, choose routes through different landscapes, or combine culture and activity. The distances and route lengths reveal very different ways of exploring the area.
Architectural History and Cultural Sites
St. Petri Church was built from fieldstones in 1151/52 by Bishop Vicelin and dedicated to the Apostle Peter. Summer concerts are held in the church. It is located on the Mönchsweg long-distance cycle route. You can book guided tours of the church through the Bosau Tourist Information Office by calling 04527/97044 or emailing info@luftkurort-bosau.de. These arrangements may change, so please check with the Tourist Information Office in advance to confirm a tour.
The Dunkersche Kate presents a different architectural impression: this 17th-century half-timbered building has a thatched roof, a cottage garden and a historic bakehouse. The Kate hosts changing art exhibitions or arts and crafts markets throughout the year. Right next to it is the Katengarten, with well-kept paths and boxwood planting typical of the region. Its half-timbering, thatch and bakehouse provide a contrast to the church’s fieldstone construction.
The Red Benches Circular Route also connects a route with a historic theme: the 5.22-kilometre circular trail passes seven red benches and leads through the history of Bosau on the Great Plön Lake. The stops make the town’s name and history the guiding thread of the tour, rather than describing the route solely by its length.
Landscape and Trails
Near Bosau lies Thranbruch, a historic cultural landscape with many natural meadows. The area is a drained bog used as grazing land, and numerous hiking routes pass through Thranbruch. The Wierensredder observation tower offers views across this cultural landscape. Meadows, grazing land and trails give Thranbruch its distinctive character.
The Haselnussschlucht is another distinctive landscape feature: this 300-metre-long, unspoilt ditch in Bosau flows into the Great Plön Lake. A narrow hiking trail leads through the gorge, across a bridge and over Löjaer Berg, continuing to the Panoramaweg. Here, a specific route can be combined with a clearly named landscape feature.
There are routes of different lengths to choose from when planning your trip. The Red Benches Circular Route is 5.22 kilometres long; the 36-kilometre circuit around Schleswig-Holstein’s largest lake can start right in Bosau. Many other routes begin at the Haus des Gastes in Bosau. This makes it possible to distinguish the historic circular tour from the much longer circuit by their route lengths, without treating them as the same route.
Bosau’s natural beach offers a different focus from the trails: it is 150 metres long and has sand free of stones. Facilities mentioned include beach volleyball, a playground and a bistro. Culture, trails and a visit to the beach are therefore distinct ways to spend your time in Bosau.
