Großer Plön Lake is Schleswig-Holstein’s largest, deepest and most island-rich lake. It lies in the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park, covers about 30 km² and reaches depths of up to 58 metres. Nearly 30 islands shape the lake’s landscape. This offers different options for planning your trip: time by the water, routes around the lake or nature watching.

Swimming, sailing and paddling

You can swim at 15 bathing spots. The lake is a sailing area without motorboats; other possible activities include canoeing, walks around the lake and fishing. Fish species include eel, perch, bream, pike, zander and roach. Canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and pedal boats are available to hire. Official entry points for diving are located in Plön’s town bay and Bosau Bay.

The different options offer different ways to enjoy the lake: at a bathing spot, swimming takes centre stage, while sailing, paddling and diving let you explore the lake from the water. If you prefer to stay on land, you can consider the circular route or individual day routes. This lets you plan your trip around the experiences that matter most to you.

Routes around the lake

The 37-kilometre Plön Lake Tour goes all the way around Großer Plön Lake. There are also 15 signposted day routes, which mostly follow quiet roads and scenic paths. They lead to picnic spots, places of interest, lakeside areas and restaurants. So, in addition to the circular route, you can choose individual destinations for day trips. Check signs and trail conditions locally.

Islands and birdlife

The lake is an important breeding ground for waterbirds in Schleswig-Holstein and lies on a major migration route for northern birds. Species found in the area include greylag geese, coots, great crested grebes and white-tailed eagles. During the spring moult, large groups of ducks and divers gather there. For nature enthusiasts, this offers a reason to turn their attention to birdlife as well as activities on and by the water.

Plön, Bosau and Dersau are located around the lake and are considered picturesque towns associated with culture, history and nature. When looking for accommodation, it can help to first decide what you want to focus on during your holiday, then take a closer look at the places around the lake. Water sports, walks and nature watching offer different ideas for your stay, without requiring you to choose just one way to experience the lake.

Respect protected areas

When out on the lake, avoid marked nature reserves and do not go onto the islands. Keep 50 to 70 metres away from protected areas and do not paddle through shallow-water zones where birds breed or rest. This is especially important when paddling, as these areas serve as breeding and resting sites.
