Natural surroundings on the eastern edge of the village

On the eastern edge of Kasseedorf lies the Kasseedorfer Teiche nature reserve, covering around 132 hectares. Its compact landscape brings together ponds, streams, small bogs, spring fens, dry grasslands, open meadows and woodland. Wet and drier habitats lie side by side here; visitors who include nature watching in their travel plans will find more than just views of the water.

At the observation platform by the Oberteich, you can look out for the great emperor dragonfly and the kingfisher. In 2020, 60 breeding bird species were recorded in the reserve, including the common crane, western marsh harrier, goosander, eagle owl and wryneck. The platform draws attention to individual species; the breeding-bird count complements this specific observation point with a broader view of the birdlife.

A trekking station on the E1

Next to the E1 long-distance hiking trail at the Alte Försterei is a trekking station with a renovated bakehouse and a camping meadow. The bakehouse has a simple sleeping area in the attic. This privately offered accommodation can be booked by prior arrangement and is intended for hikers and cyclists; a maximum of one night is permitted. Local conditions apply. For accommodation planning, this is a clearly defined option for a short trekking break: the bakehouse and camping meadow offer two different types of overnight stay, both as part of an offer limited to one night.

Culture and landscape in the wider destination of Ostholstein

In Eutin, the wider destination of Ostholstein brings together stage performances, museums and waterside paths. Every summer, the Eutiner Festspiele presents a varied programme of open-air opera or operetta performances. The Ostholstein Museum presents changing exhibitions as well as a permanent exhibition about Eutin in its heyday around 1800. Eutin Castle Museum is situated right on the GroĂźer Eutiner See and is surrounded by a landscaped garden. If you prefer to explore outdoors, the Eutiner See circular route is nearby: parts of it run directly along the shore, while others follow natural woodland paths, with views of Eutin, the castle and its garden.

The history of the wider destination of Ostholstein can also be explored in different ways. The Oldenburger Wall in Oldenburg in Holstein is one of Schleswig-Holstein’s most significant archaeological monuments. The Oldenburger Wall Museum uses excavation finds and reconstructions to present the archaeologically and historically reconstructed history of the ring fortification and the Slavs in Ostholstein. With more than 4,600 historical exhibits, the Lensahn Museum Farm shows what work and life in the countryside used to be like. Exhibitions at Cismar Monastery in the municipality of Grömitz change regularly; concerts are held in the vaulted hall during the winter half of the year.

Ostholstein offers a range of ways to experience nature and get active. At Bungsberg, you can hike, cycle, watch wildlife and discover nature. The Bungsberg telecommunications tower has an observation platform 42 metres above its mast. On Fehmarn, the one-kilometre nature discovery trail in the Wallnau Waterbird Reserve runs through the nature reserve. In Heiligenhafen, the Natureum Steinwarder nature park gives children and adults the chance to experience nature with all their senses. These nature experiences range from activities at Bungsberg to a walk through the protected area on Fehmarn.

Along the coast, landscape and local history come together: a nearly seven-kilometre stretch of fine sandy beach connects Haffkrug and Scharbeutz. Along the promenade in Haffkrug, the Fisheries Discovery Trail uses information panels and interactive features to explain the history of fishing and the fish species of the Baltic Sea. You can explore the trail independently; at eight stops, QR codes provide access to stories and accounts narrated by an audio guide. The trail thus combines a visit to the promenade with insights into the history of fishing.

Those comparing other water-based experiences in Ostholstein will find a range of options: the Ostsee Therme Scharbeutz offers a water world, large slides, eleven different saunas and direct access to the beach. The water-ski cableway in Süsel offers beginner courses every day. The Meereszentrum Fehmarn displays more than 1,000 marine animals in over 40 display aquariums containing a total of 700,000 litres of seawater. Before making specific plans, check the thermal baths’ current offerings and the course schedule in Süsel.
