Elmshorn has many different facets: a Gothic church with Baroque furnishings, an industrial museum in a listed warehouse, sculptures along the Krückau and trips aboard the historic sailing barge each add their own character. There are also paths through Krückau Park, cycling opportunities and a swimming centre. This means you can shape your stay around culture, the water or getting active.

Discover culture and local history

St. Nikolai is Elmshorn’s oldest church building. The Gothic hall church, with its Baroque furnishings, is located in the centre and regularly welcomes visitors. Elmshorn’s water tower also tells the story of the town: it was commissioned in 1902 and is open to the public following renovation. Check current visiting arrangements before your visit.

The Elmshorn Industrial Museum explores the development of industry, technology, work and everyday life in Schleswig-Holstein. Its exhibits are spread across four floors of a listed warehouse, and multilingual audio guides are also available. Its focus on industrial history differs from the personal and everyday insights offered at the Konrad-Struve-Haus.

There, a modern exhibition presents everyday, typical and curious aspects of Elmshorn’s past. It also features a reconstructed living room. As a walk-through collection of local history, the Konrad-Struve-Haus invites you to explore the town’s past through a variety of objects. The Taharahaus in the Jewish cemetery offers another historical perspective: its exhibition is devoted to Elmshorn’s Jewish residents and their persecution under National Socialism.

Twelve traditional and contemporary works stand in the sculpture garden by the Krückau. They offer a chance to encounter different forms of public art in the town centre. Guided town tours take in historic buildings, the harbour and well-known residents of Elmshorn. If you would like to join a tour, check current dates and booking options in advance.

Experience the Krückau and the harbour

The landscape around the Krückau changes with the ebb and flow of the tide. The river also provides a habitat for lampreys and kingfishers and forms part of the designated “Obere Krückau” and “Schleswig-Holsteinisches Elbästuar und angrenzende Flächen” FFH sites. These features give a riverside walk a different perspective from the town’s history.

The Krückau walking trail starts at Mühlendamm and runs through Krückau Park. At the harbour, Elmshorn’s Krückauhafen is its maritime centre. From its berth in Elmshorn harbour, the historic sailing barge GLORIA offers seasonal sailing and motorboat trips on the Krückau, the Elbe and its tributaries. As trips run seasonally, it is advisable to check current departure times.

Get active in Elmshorn

The Ochsenweg and Elbe Cycle Route offer ways to explore Elmshorn and the surrounding area by bike. The Elbe Cycle Route passes through Elmshorn.

Badepark Elmshorn adds swimming and leisure options to the walking routes and cultural attractions. Its facilities include a 25-metre pool, a 110-metre slide, a climbing wall, a children’s area, a sauna area and water-based classes. You can reach the swimming centre by bike, bus or car. Facilities and classes may change, so check what is currently available in advance.

Choose accommodation to suit your stay

When looking for accommodation in Elmshorn, you can start by thinking about which experiences you want to shape your stay. If you are particularly interested in architectural history, exhibitions and local culture, St. Nikolai, the water tower and the various museums and exhibitions can help guide your plans. If you would rather spend time outdoors, consider the Krückau walking trail, the sculpture garden and the cycling opportunities. Harbour trips and the swimming centre offer further options, subject to the season and current availability. This way, your interests can guide your search for a suitable place to stay.
